Most heartbreaking song.....in the world, ever!

Postby iohannes on Fri Apr 23, 2004 1:08 am

My votes goes to Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah.

Most people might know the John Cale (ex-Velvet Underground) version from Shrek. His version, or Rufus Wainwrights's (from the Movie's soundtrack) or the original from Leonard Cohen are good. But Jeff Buckley's, with all the tragedy surrounding his life, makes it a really heartbreaking melody. Any oher suggestions welcome...

All By Myself - Celine Dion, or other various artists. Can sum up your life sometimes, or so it feels! :(

I Know It's Over- The Smiths, from the fantastic 'The Queen Is Dead'. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujiah is the definitive version, I have to say. And 'Grace' is a stunning album.

Dale Cooper: Yes?
Log Lady: One day my log will have something to say about this. My log saw something that night.
Dale Cooper: Really. What did it see?
Log Lady: Ask it.
[Cooper hesitates]
Log Lady: I thought so. (walks away)

Maybe Don Gibson's 'Legend in my time', also recorded by Roy Orbison and, here, by Laura Cantrell (note this is a legal download!):

If loneliness meant world acclaim,
Everyone would know my name,
I'd be a legend in my time.

If they gave gold statuettes,
For tears and regrets,
I'd be a legend in my time

"A Winter's Tale" is the only song that I've heard that I really can't listen to due to its tirade of depressingness.

I've just read over the lyrics again, I'll have to cheer myself up with something else before lectures now :(

[hr]You would not feel sadness if you never tasted joy
That's the curse of humans - born in passion, you destroy
No tree has branches so foolish as to fight among themselves

'Philadelphia' can't remember the guy who sang it though, might think it's really sad because it goes with the film.

Most definitely not the most gut-wrenching song on my list, but rather a mix of bittersweetness and upbeat 'i will survive'ness. I love it in any case, and think it deserves mention:

Barenaked Ladies - Break your heart

(To anyone going to their concert in Glasgow on May 1st... Woohooo, I'll be there.)

Edit: Especially the live version on 'Rock Spectacle'

The Ryan Adams studio version of Wonderwall. Trust me it's better than you'd think!! Just beautiful.
Totally agree with the Buckley Hallelujah too.

Philadelphia Freedom is a song by Elton John - the song from the film is Streets Of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen.

Couldn't settle on one song- the entire album is revoltingly heartbreaking.
