I saw the production, and liked it. I'm a fan of the play already, so it didn't take a whole lot to win me over, but there were certain elements that I liked quite a lot. The atmosphere of the production was good, particularly with the opening 'festival' stylings, and the shipwreck scene.
The actors were on the whole, quite good, and I was particularly impressed by several, especially in the Toby Belch/Sir Andrew/Mary/Malvolio subplot. Actually, on this note the production did a very good job of highlighting the comedy - I've seen a few surprisingly unfunny renditions of the play.
I do have a few critiques of the production though. The castle, while an inspiring backdrop, is huge, and consequently an acoustic nightmare. I think they should have made the stage smaller, and drawn the audience in closer for a more intimate production. It seemed that more often then not the actors were very far away from me, particularly in the scenes when they were in the far corner of the castle. Essentially, the space was too big for the actors to possibly hope to fill.
Also, the lack of lighting, which while I understand was due to financial constraints, really did affect the show. The torches looked nice, but a lot of the subtlety and visuals of the last few scenes were lost.
All in all though it was an enjoyable night, so congrats to all the people involved. I guess the next big Shakespeare on the horizon is Macbeth next term.
