*is graduating on the 23rd*

First I've heard of it. Is it the morning or afternoon ceremony?

ETA: It's the afternoon ceremony. Which is mine. Ye Gods.

Um, why is the university giving him a degree and why, considering he has turned down most offers of a similar nature from other univerisities, is he accepting it?

Because he is a genius, and the man presenting the degree is a big Dylan fan/scholar ...and he's here anyway for two shows...the only other one he's accepted was Princeton and we're the Princeton of the North or summat...I DON'T KNOW! I'm too busy tearing my hair out at my lack of omniscience!

Just out of interest what would constitute a pseudo date?

A 'pseudo' date?? Sheesh... that's a pretty lame offer if you're that desperate! :-D

Maybe, may be not; but surely there must be far more deserving people out there.

and the man presenting the degree is a big Dylan fan/scholar

I can not bring myself to believe that even this university would make that a factor in deciding whether to give him a gong. Surely not?

More deserving? There are plenty of DESERVING people but surely you can't fault the man who defined a musical genre and generation? He is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians and writers of the twentieth century.

As for Dr Corcoran presenting the degree being a factor - I do believe people have to put cases forward for honourary graduands. So it would be a factor.

The university should consider this as a means of getting people to work harder - get real celebs in for honorary degrees, publish at the beginning of term who will be at your ceremony, and surely no one would flunk out! Just a thought...

I was quite excited about graduating at the same ceremony as Trevor McDonald getting an honorary degree.. hmm. but I wish I was in the same ceremony as Bob Dylan... never mind, I'm seeing him play at the SECC on Wednesday night so can't wait for that.

Is anyone else going to see him?

I'm sorry but I just don't get how people can be so excited at being in the same room as a 'celebrity'.
In the case of Sir Trevor, he was a good newsreader, but how on earth does that merit being rewarded by an academic institution. I might be able to understand if the person had given the university a heap of money which helped further scholarship, but what have these people actually done?
