Daily Mail

Postby - on Sat Aug 07, 2004 8:14 am

OK I might as well be honest- I think the Daily Mail is an implicitly racist, homophobic and reactionary paper which seeks to take this country back to the good ol’ days of sending kids up chimneys and colonising Africa for the benefit of the ‘natives’, but maybe I’m just raising my blood pressure for no good reason! Its attempt to ban these ‘evil’ games (Manhunt et al) really makes me wonder whether the (so called ‘most popular daily) paper believes thinks we are responsible, as adults, to decide anything for ourselves.

Phewwww I needed to say that!

I agree wholheartedly. It's pish. And it's a certain type of person who reads it aswell.

I don't think that an attack on the Daily Mail needs to make slurs on Britain's Imperial past - why must you bleeding heart liberals persist in this notion that the Empire was akin to the Empire in Star Wars in its unprecedented levels of evil?

That said, the Daily Mail is crap.

Even just reading the title of this thread on the front page filled me with murderous rage and hatred, so I would be inclined to agree with what you say.

I hate that paper with so much fucking venom I think I'm about to have a stroke

The Times is read by the people who run the country. The Daily Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country. The Guardian is read by the people who think they ought to run the country. The Morning Star is read by the people who think the country ought to be run by another country. The Independent is read by people who don't know who runs the country but are sure they're doing it wrong. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by the people who own the country. The Daily Express is read by the people who think the country ought to be run as it used to be run. The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who still think it is their country. And the Sun's readers don't care who runs the country providing she has big tits.)

More words of truth from Yes Minister. I think that the Daily Mail is utter tripe.
It took me nearly four years to persuade my parents to stop reading it.

I remember when I changed the newspapers for Chattan to the Times, Telegraph and, newspaper of gods, Daily Mail. The Scotsman was thrown in to satisfy the commies.

You forgot the Scotsman, which is read by, well, Scotsmen.

It's not the most popular I don't think and as for the latter, perhaps it is just following in the governments footsteps?

We have a national paper called the Morning Star? That does sound like a Commie paper, I've never heard of it though.

And the Scotsman is pretty much an Edinburgh local newspaper in my estimation. While the Times has over the past decade suffered from a big slide in quality - it's where Sun journos go when they're promoted.

I like the Crossword in the daily mail, and the quick quiz. Oh! And Fred Bassett. But it is a house wives paper, a typical tabloid. I like reading the Times (and yes, I know that the Times can now be said to be a tabloid, but it still has more interesting articles!)

I like the Saturday crossword...when I'm working in the museum someone usually brings it in, and it keeps us occupied for a while!

That's what happened???

I thought that the good papers always got stolen earlier in the day before I reached the common room - turns out they were never even delivered!

It was Sun, Guardian, and somtimes the Times or Independent in JBH, much better range. Perves and pacificists both satisfied.

It is a Commie paper.

The Mail- I hate it almost as much as the Sun, who are a pack of loathsome vultures.

Most papers aren't worth buying, mind. I just read them on the web for free.

my brother sent his flatmates out to the garage to get a Sun on a saturday so that they could get a TV listing mag (the flatmate was going out anyway.) There weren't any suns, so he came back with a morning star. It didn't have a TV guide.

As for the Daily mail, it does ym head in. when i was researching my disseration in 6th year, i got into a fight with peter hitchens, and exchanged about 3,000 words on the state of britain's prisons. my "favourite" mail stories include "How women are turning men gay" and "Kim Wilde: I used to be a highly successful pop star, but i only found true happines in looking after my husband and my kids."

The sun really annoys me as well, with its ridiculous self promotion at every opportunity. It waqs the sun that won the general election in 1997. it was the sun that beat Germany 5-1. it was the sun that found the irish lottery winner. it was the sun that ...AAARGH!

having said that, for some stupid reason, i'mn a bit addicted to their football cartoon.

I think the Daily Star is for those who want maybe an idea there is a world outside their own home and who like tits... whereas the Sport is just for people who don't care.

The Sun on the other hand is a far more sinister and inidious affair, it might attempt to come off as tits and celebs but really it's a diabolical manipulation of the stupid and stupidest alike.

i was speaking to a mate of mine (48 years old) who only has the sun to read at work. hsi take on it was

"How come they're always 22 and from london"

to which i responded "And what a coincidence that their views on current events always match Murdoch's agenda"

You could say that about the Times, despite Murdoch only being allowed to buy it in the 80s on the solemn promise that he would have no editorial influence. Guess that lastest long.

Yeah and interesting the way only a few of our papers printed anything at all about James Murdoch messing up with his company. Why was it the Guardian had it on their front page but there was no mention of it in The Sun, The Times, etc. I wonder?
