Simple but fundamental question. Wing collar - points behind the bow tie or in front of?

Although, to return to the photograph I posted of Chancellor Macmillan, the points of his collar were higher up than the bow tie, so I suppose it depends on the height of the collar.

Ede and Ravenscroft always show it in front of the collar, in their catalogue.

Even in front of the silk scarf. Staged photo, anyone?

I'll see you all on the 22nd!

I recommend morning coat, Dickie, or you could go for University tartan. If I had found somewhere in Edinburgh today that sold morning suits, I would wear one, but the quickest time I could get on one was 4 weeks.

They really really need to become mainstream once again.

Moss Bros on George Street will sell you a morning coat across the counter. Not cheaply, but they have them. And Slater's further down will sell you striped trousers for a reasonable sum. (In fact, if you're so inclined, Slater's will also sell you a black short jacket and waistcoat to go with the trousers, which ensemble I've always fancied would go rather nicely under a gown.)

Come on, chaps. If enough of us wear morning dress, perhaps the University will relent its foolishness and put it back into the regulations on academic dress.

On that note, incidentally, what do we think of black toppers at weddings? Too funereal? Look like you're trying to tell the happy couple something?

In front. I prefer the points to project out, such that they are above the tie, rather than be folded down to obscure it.

However, I refer you to the portrait of Principal Irvine, under whose benevolent gave Sallies student will shortly be revising:

Ah, Moss Bros. Never even gave it a thought. Depending on what I'm doing this week, I may see if they have my size (pain being a 36, or 38 at a push, anyone?)

I was in Slater's, and tried on the trousers, and short coat and waistcoat, although I wasn't too convinced with the latter two, I'd much prefer tails.

Pity I didn't have sufficient notice / bank balance to get one tailored up, I have found myself staring at ones in various catalogues since looking yesterday.

One hopes that that was his intention. If not, the artist must have been having a larf.

I'm headed down to Slaters this week to pick up a dinner jacket ensemble, and I'm wondering:

Linen Suit?

Is it worthwhile? I need something for summer, and would appreciate any input from seasoned linen wearers as to the advantages and disadvantages.

Regards.

I'd recommend it. I used to wear a linen suit a great deal in St Andrews' summers. The major downside, in my experience, is that people will spill red wine on you almost as soon as you walk out the door. It happened so often I began to wonder how much red wine there was on other clothes where it didn't show up so well. Makes you quite paranoid.

My linen suit seems to be shaping up well. Even though I've been accused of looking like the Del Monte man.

Practically though, it does crease even by glancing at it.

Creasing is no bad thing. You'll look less like the Man from Del Monte if you don't get too fastidious about pressing it. A slight rumpling is no bad thing in linen.
