Having more punters through the door than there was in one of the most disastrous years for debates is not in itself a good thing. It is quite easy to better than appalling, but that is not the same as good.

Having packed debates week after week is a good thing. Having a level of attendances not seen since Patterson's board is a good thing. Compared to Weigler's run, most attendances are better.

Firstly, I was responding directly to the previous suggestion that debates last year were empty, making most of this pretty well irrelevant. Second, however, your suggestion that it was easy to move out of a situation where the House was almost literally empty, is not quite true, because it is much harder to increase attendance from a low level than it is once the Society has built up a base of popularity.

Third, last year was not predominantly about building up large attendences in LPH in any case. Rather it was about and creating the very base from which things have been built up this year - improving the financial situation, fostering unity throughout the Society's activities where previously there was division, securing the continued support and involvement of the Association. As I keep saying, that things have been buliding up from there is all to the good.

Did he pay you to say that, or did he use force?

What manner of bizarre Star Wars-Lord of the Rings hybrid are you people cooking up?!?

That said, I do believe Master Yoda claimed that "size matters not" ergo he's in with a chance...

Actually, now that I think of it, it does seem unlikely he used mind control skills. Powerful is he with the force; but not *that* powerful...

Indeed, he couldn't even beat Preston for Association Chair

I hope, incidentally, that this record of capacity audiences will be continued on Wednesday, at which debate there will be at least three Fathers of the House.

Rumours suggest that Mr Murray will grace the chamber with his presence.

And if that doesn't thrill and delight, I will also point out that the last three winners of the UDS Cloister Races will be assembled in the same place at the same time as well - namely, Eliot Wilson, myself, and the current fleet of foot Convenor and President Peter Blair.

Perhaps some sort of commemorative photograph? Better still, we could commission the Franklin Mint to produce a series of commemmorative plates - "Cloister Race Winners - gotta get 'em all". Who will you choose?

I trust that there has been a veritable blitz of publicity for this evening's debate, and that LPH will be full to bursting.

It was a great shame, I thought, due to the quality of three of the table speakers' performances, that there was not a fully-packed House.

It was a greater shame that I only heard Peter Murray called "Chicken Boy" once all evening.

The look on his face was just precious.
