Website

I was wondering what the reasoning is behind changing the website and what, if anything, was wrong with the old one?

Sadly I wasn't in town for the AGM and missed out on this, and for that I'm sorry, but curiosity has got the better of me and I have to ask.

Change

Postby Dickie on Sat Apr 15, 2006 6:57 pm

I am reminded of an old joke last uttered in LPH by David Kerr:

"How many St Andrews debaters does it take to change a light bulb?

Change! Why Change?"

Changing it to what? Are we talking about st-and.ac.uk/~debates or some other site?

Changing it to what?

Just to let you know, I'm in the process of developing the new website right now, and ANY INPUT is greatly welcome. I'll be asking individual Board of Ten members if they have any critiques or specifics they want added, but I'd love any input. The address will stay the same and I'm using a lot of the old material. It will be FULLY up and running by summer (fingers crossed, sooner).

Some new and improved areas to look forward to:
-a button on every page that takes you back to 'home'
-the gaudeammus
-the constitution
-an improved schools page
-an LPH page w/ pertinent research links and info on the weeks speakers.
-extra space on every page for announcements
-a PHOTO GALLERY (LPH, IV's, SOCIALS)
-a publicity page for sponsors, alums, etc

that's just a taste. all suggestions welcome. (js482)

It lacks anything about attracting sponsorship.

There should be packages, contact details, and logos of current sponsors.

An appraisal, as a member of the web team for the union website (or at least the redesign team!)

The design is fine. It's not broken. Why fix it?

Adding a link to home is easy.

As is the Gaudeamus

LPH page would be needed to be updated regularly, but again, easy to add / update

The page only uses up a fraction of the browser at the moment, you could produce header banners advertising the event / bottom of page banners.

Photo gallery, again easy to implement.

The problem I see, is that the easiest way to do it, and, to be honest, the easiest way to update it, would be to write something in PHP (or get me sufficiently drunk to say I'll do it, it works) which would basically produce a graphical interface for easy update of the website (like sending an email, 30s job). Only problem is, that the university don't support PHP. Again, I'm able to donate hosting to the society if you really want.

My favourite drink is of course gin and tonic, and my favourite gin is Tanqueray. Sufficient will enable me to code the website.

Let me know if you need my help.

dangerous, offer. just kidding, very generous of you, and I might take you up on that at some point. Treasurer Chris Hawkins is currently helping me out (darn that unreliable Board of Ten) but extra help is infrequently ignored. Thanks for the advice thus far, I may try to find you in the not-too-distant future.

Jessica

ps. if you're interested in helping, it would help me to know your name...

Currently clicking on "Union Debating Society" takes you back to home. But the other things look like important improvements.

Indeed, I do like the design (since I made it). I hope it doesn't change too much, just builds on what is there.

The page only uses up a fraction of the browser at the moment, you could produce header banners advertising the event / bottom of page banners.

That depends how big your screen is! I'm using a 12" laptop, so it fits pretty much perfectly. I figured that was the smallest screen size anyone would have.

I suppose my point was regarding vertical resolution. Although I agree that horizontal resolution should always be within screen limits, a 60 or 80px image at the top of the screen wouldn't be *too* detrimental, that is, compared to a skyscraper, which would just be wrong

Jess,

If you need pictures I have incriminating pictures of many of the LPH regulars.
