I feel compelled to point out that there has been a consistently brilliant and hilarious speaker at the last five freshers' weeks!

Indeed I have been at three of those - but who took that role at the other two?

I think I've spoken at the last four. Alas it seems that Dr Joss's and my streak is to come to an end. Sic transit, and all that.

Well, quite. I gather now that the first proposition and opposition speakers are Mr Vit and Dame Ellen Macarthur. Can anyone fill in the rest of the line-up for me? I'm merely curious.

Well, that's what I was told, at any rate.

You're going to take some time to prepare your impromptu, spontaneous, witty remarks, then?

I tend to come up with a series of jokes and then construct a speech around that.

Will Ellen MacArthur cry instead of giving a speech, or was I fooled by "Dead Ringers"?

In terms of being significantly less likely to be chucked in the bin, I'd say a great improvement. This way, we're more likely to get students who have flipped through the guide to look for an event that might be fun to go to rather than die-hard school debaters.

It pains me to revisit this, but I think you're wrong. We got an excellent mix of people at debates, year after year after year, and not solely those who had debated at school. We did this by the amazing method of sending everyone coming to St Andrews a nice little booklet explaining what we were all about, what we did, when and where we did it, and how they could become involved. I'm sure the Association booklet does this too, but I doubt very, very much that it does it anything like as effectively. But we live in an age where the less information disseminated the happier people seem to be. So what would I know?
