SCHOOLS DEBATING - THE COURIER COMPETITION

If anyone is interested in helping with the Courier Competition this year, Judges, Chairs and Sergeants are needed for the first round of this year's competition, which is taking place between the 24th October and 30th November. Although there are only 12 heats, I hope to include as many people as possible, so even if you have hardly any experience of debating please get in touch.

You will be picked up at the union (the time depends on where you're going, it could be in St Andrews, but it could be as far away as Arbroath or Stirling). You go to the debate, which starts around 7, and following the debate you are taken out for a meal, which more often than not involves curry.

If you are wanting to help please email Sally on svy@, including any judging and debating experience, and which school you went to (as although you can chair or sergeant a round with teams from your old school in it, you are unable to judge it) and any other schools you are unable to judge (e.g. If a sibling attends). This is particularly important if you are from the area of the Courier Competition, which includes schools in Fife, Perth and Kinross, Dundee, Angus and Aberdeen. Please also include whether you are free on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and whether you are planning to stay in St Andrews over reading week. Please email even if you have spoken to me about helping already! Could you also include a mobile number, in case I need to get in touch at the last minute. Email me if you have any questions (svy), or post on this thread.

Thanks,
Sally

I'd love to (12th year of involvement? Getting to Douglas-esque levels here), but I fear the commute would be a bit much ;)

I seem to recall you were time keeping as a wee school boy when we first met through this comp. some time ago...

Unless I have my dates hopelessly screwed up, isn't next year the 20th year of the Courier (or was it not called that back then?), because I seem to recall competing in it back in 1987. !2 years? Pah. Lightweights.

This coming year is the 19th competition - the one that starts in October 2007 will be the 20th.

Are people all ready and excited about the debates, the inevitable Nazi references and the vats of curry we'll consume?

I don't believe it needs to be said, but i'll be double sure to brief my boys against Nazi references.

They start tomorrow night.

Well, they'll have to be quite imaginative to get the Nazis into a debate on homeopathy...

Hardly, Hitler was a great believer in homoeopathy and quackery of all stamps.
