Durham Opens 2007

Postby mattina on Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:45 pm

Durham Opens will be held on the 16th and 17th of June this year. It will be a two-day competition with five rounds of closed motions.

Given the timing of the competition and whatnot, the society will not be paying reg fees for teams; reg is 50 pounds.

Teams who wish to go, will have to self fund. Should anyone wish to go, email me at lem55 and I'll let you know how to register and be able to pass along the other details of the competition as I get them.

Did the society pay the reg. fees for Durham last year?

Yes, but only if both speakers were from St Andrews. However, this year is not last year and given the timing of the competition and situation this year, we decided not to.

What's so special about the timing that's changed from last time?

It seems to be at inconvenient time for a lot of people this year.

Besides, we feel that our resources are better spent elsewhere.

Newcastle are holding an open of their own the day before. 3 rounds, open motions...

They've never done this before, but they're only charging ten quid.

Couldn't you just have just said, at the start, that the society hasn't got the money to fund the teams? It's no bloody secret.

Information from Durham:

Postby kdc4 on Tue Apr 17, 2007 11:08 am

As Euros this year will be taking place in the summer, the Durham Open 2007
has become a closed-motion two-day tournament where those heading to Koc can
hone their skills and hacks can prove the can still bring sexyback. Don't
worry, we're not taking ourselves too seriously, there will still be plenty
of yakka, and the Open will return to its traditional format next year.

The *team* *cap* has been set at *60* and registration has already been
busy, so please email durhadebate@gmail.com asap to reserve your place.
Registration costs *£50* (for judges £25) and includes *crash, alcohol* and
*5 rounds* breaking to semis. Registration on the Saturday (16th June) will
be 10.30am – 1pm with the first round starting at 2pm. We aim to be finished
debating, and start drinking, by around 6pm on the Sunday.

Message Ends

From the membership of the applicable facebook group, this year's Open is looking to be super-competitive.

Cheers,

If anyone wants to go, make sure that you register soon-it looks like it is filling up.

(and if you could let me know just so the society has a list that would be grand)

Just as an added incentive for the last time (I think) John Stewart and myself will be speaking together as team Heartless Bastards! Any of you freshers think you've got what it takes???

Come on it'll be fun.

More importantly though anyone going to Euros keep in mind that Can Okar is the CA of Durham and also the CA of Euros. Seeing his style of motion and decions in the semis and final etc will be useful.

Registration for the Newcastle Open is now closed (although it seemed that team cap might be extended if you brought judges with you).

The Durham Open 2007 was won by UCC Phil C (Diarmuid Early and Ross Frenett) from second proposition. The other finalists were: Fat Children are harder to kidnap (Jason Vit and John Stewart), Sam Block’s Speech writers (Mhairi Murdoch and Daniel Warents) and UCC Phil A (Derek ‘Jimmy’ Doyle and Derek Lande). The motion was something vaguely related to incorporating the right to choose into EU law, although that wasn’t exactly what happened. The final panel was chaired by Can Okar, and also consisted of Andrew Fitch, Kizzy Russell, Ally Cormack, Connie Grieve, Adam Bott, and Bob Nimmo.
I will stick the tab up at some point when an electronic version appears.

"We've found Madeline" is arguably one of the best team names I've heard in a while.

I have to say, I thought that rather tasteless. Spartan references are far more appropriate; such a pity the rules prohibit kicking one's opponent into a pit.

In any case, congratulations once more to our own teams and speakers; it doesn't look as though our excellent reputation on the circuit is in any jeopardy.
