Postby Dickie on Wed May 16, 2007 4:03 pm

Do we have any idea what is happening next year. My diary fills up so quicky and I like to know when things are going to happen as far in advance as is possable.

I know that the BoT will be working very hard trying to make next year the best ever but please let us plebeans know what you have in store.

I think the Term Card was being finalised, last I heard. Worry not, it looks like there'll at least be a full complement of Wednesday debates, on tedious foreign policy issues. I think there's some on Fridays too. Read as above.

Because fun motions don't work, apparently.

I do hope you're exaggerating. I was rather hoping to speak again at some point, and while I can be as tedious as the next man, I like to think my forte is for a more light-hearted debate - preferably a well attended one, such as, I don't know, at the start of the year.

But surely everyone wants to hear very technical motions that are really pertinent to the student body? [/sarcasm]

I'd very much like to see you debate, Dr Joss, but that's now down to the Internal Secretary, I'll try to make your name crop up in conversation - if they'll have you...

And yes, the Freshers Week debate most probably promises to be something very pertinent, stodgy and tedious, last I heard.

The term card will be out soon. It just needs to be finalised.

Also there will be an Alumni debate next term.

That's good news: any idea what the terms are likely to be for invitations?

Does that mean that alumni will be invited to speak only in the Alumnus Debate? Unfortunate if you should find you have a renowned expert in a field with the misfortune to have graduated from St Andrews...

I don't think that was implied in Tom's post.

Bully for you. I did. Hence my post.

I hinted I'd like to speak in LPH again and the reply was there would be an Alumnus Debate - thus I sought clarification. From someone there - not you.

The Alumni debate will happen on a Friday evening in early December. I will release the date when I have it (which will be in the next few days). As for who is going to speak I will be disscussing the matter with the Internal Secretary. I will post more details shortly. Sorry for taking so long with this but I have only just finished exams. Also we are looking for maximum participation on the part of the Alumni, so if you are keen to play a part in the debate I am sure we can find a way of getting you involved. The Alumni debate is for the Alumni after all.

So that is the only one alumni are being asked to speak in?

Does anyone else see why I'm finding this puzzling?

I think Mr Cahn was trying to say the opposite, rather than "Alumni will only be asked to speak in the Alumni Debate", I read it as "Only alumni will be allowed to speak in the Alumni Debate".

Though, I'm never sure.

That would make more sense, but it's not how I read it - on this occasion I would be perfectly happy to be wrong.

Just to clear this up. The Alumni debate will consist of Alumni speakers only. That however will NOT preclude Alumni speakers from speaking in any other debate during the year. I would never want to confine our Alumni to speaking in only one debate a year, such a course of action would be the hight of stupidity and completly unjustified. I am very sorry for any confusion in this matter.

The Alumni debate has been instituted to give our Alumni a chance to return to the society and have an evening dedicated specifically to them. It was an idea that I shamelessly stole off Exnihilo! If you have any specific questions please email me at tprc@st-andrews.ac.uk or post here. Once again I will be posting full details of the debate soon.

All the best,

Tom Cahn, Convenor

Thanks, sorry to be a pain, but confusion happens a lot to those of advanced age.

I can remember when unjustified supidity was common place within the UDS. We hope that that is no more nor will it return.

Details of the Alumni debate are now on their own thread. As for the term card this will be released soon. There are one or two things still left to do.
