and the final motion is....

THW ban faith schools.

So the final of this prestigious competition, whence will come the team to represent Scotland in the International Mace, the winners of which will still have it on their CVs when they're 30, will be decided on... a motion suitable for the first round of a juniors competition. Hmmm.

Mace Final

Postby mattina on Thu Mar 20, 2008 5:44 pm

Hello, just a reminder that the Mace Final is this coming Tuesday the 25th of March in Edinburgh at the Playfair Library. The final starts at 7 pm.

Given that we have 3 St Andrews teams in it I think it would be great if we could bring along a crowd to cheer them on!

I'll be going so if anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to ask and if you do want to if you could let me know since the ESU are wondering how many people they should expect to have!

Thanks

Apparently there is no official dress code, though I think jacket and tie is preferred.

Good luck to everyone tommorrow!

Well done to the winning St A team - it was a horrible position to be in, and they handled it well. Also big congrats to Jess and Beth for dealing well with the Crazy First Prop, and to Rach and Chris for speaking well too.

I'll expect to see you all celebrating tonight!

Its only taken us 60 years. Well done!
As has been said by all those who were there last night the only question when the judges went out was which St Andrews team would win, and I think enormous credit is due to all six of our speakers, especially Doug and Connie (who were excellent)
Best of luck at Dartmouth House!

International Mace Final Draw

Postby mattina on Mon Apr 14, 2008 3:57 pm

Motion: "TH supports increasing the use of civilian nuclear energy".

Randomly drawn positions:

1st prop: England (Lincoln's Inn: Hannah Klein nad Usman Ahmed)

2nd prop: Ireland (UCD Law: Mags Carter and Ross McGuire)

1st opp: Wales (Aberystwyth: David Jones and Holly Tomlinson

2nd opp: Scotland (St Andrews: Connie Grieve and Doug Cochran)

The final is the 25 April in London. Should anyone wish to attend and support St Andrews at their first ever appearance in the international mace, please email me and I can tell you who to RSVP to.

What a shame we're on the wrong side of that debate.

Also, shame I can't attend, as nuclear power really is my pet subject.

Doug is only factually correct the 2 teams in the running to win were Scotland and Ireland with a good case for either. Wales were a washout and England were somewhere between boring and dire.

Connie and Doug were both persuasive and subtle in their argumentation with originality and style also faced with opening the opposition from third place on the table.

A travesty of a result and another question mark over the relevance of the Mace as a competition.

Hard lines guys - I wasn't there (the temptations of Amsterdam being greater than Dartmouth House) but all reports seem to indicate that you did us all very proud.
Regardless of the result I think that enormous credit is due both for being the first St Andreans ever to make the International Final, and of course for all of the other many successes you have brought to us over the last four years. I think it is safe to say you will be very missed.
