Well done guys - it seems as if everyone has done well and congratulations to all. Frank, 16 points in your first Worlds is pretty awesome, and I don't think I did that well at Worlds so well done.

Also congratulations to Connie and Doug on breaking again.

Well done everyone! Incredible that St Andrews does so well against such stiff competition and testament to the talents of our (your) debaters.

It's probably worth mentioning St Andrews A are through to the Semis, isn't it?

Qtr Final motion: This House would force religious adoption agencies to place children with homosexual couples.

The Semifinalists:
Oxford A
Monash A
St Andrews A
Sydney A
Cambridge B
Queensland E
Yale E
Brandeis B

St Andrews have Queensland E, Cambridge B, and Sydney A in the semis - any news from these please let me know.

It wouldn't harm, the stuff on the table already could do with a sprucing!

I'm just hoping there'll be as many wine receptions to celebrate - after last year's Worlds success, College Gate were all too happy to celebrate :P

Congratulations you guys, and keep up the good work!

Just to keep the running motion log going, the Octo motion was: THB that governments in the developing world should invest in sex tourism.

Far, far more importantly-congratulations to all and go Connie and Doug!

Dear God they did it again...now the real tension begins!

Sam and Adam out - for those who don't know IV stuff that is amazing and a half (p.s. Doug I told you so.)

Connie and Doug have been eliminated.

I use a little emoticon for this post to express my dismay.

They made it to the semi-final ("THB people should be granted asylum for extreme economic need" or something like that), where they were finally put out. I don't quite agree with the decision, especially the Sydney team which they mauled that went straight through (a Cambridge team also went through on a split decision).

They were incredibly successful and have made it to the semi-finals twice, an incredible achievement. Congratulations!

Tonight's Grand Final will be between teams from Cambridge B, Oxford A, Sydney A, and Monash A. I'm pretty sure those are the right team letters, but the wireless in this Soviet gulag-resort is pretty slow and I don't have the patience to check; verify it yourselves!

I was assuming everyone would be following the many other blogs etc running but if not, the final is as follows:

Prop 1 Monash A (Tim Jeffrie & Fiona Prowse)
Opp 1 Cambridge B (Daniel Warents & Mhairi Murdoch)
Prop 2 Oxford A (Lewis Iwu & Samir Deger-Sen)
Opp2 Sydney A (Dom Thurbon & Chris Croke)

Daniel is an FP of RGS Newcastle
Mhairi was at Grove Academy Broughty Ferry!
Chris Croke is twice at World Champion at WSDC – Lima 03 and Stuttgart 04
Lewis is from St Bonaventure’s, east London and is a fomer International Schools Mace winner
Samir was at King Edward’s Birmingham

Motion is THW require people who infect others with HIV to make drug support payments

Many congrats to Doug and Connie for doing so well.

They seem to be on about the 4th speech at the moment and the place to follow it is the Facebook group:

Silver

If there is no silver on its way back, then I shall donate a small token to mark two years success.

WUDC results

Postby Imago on Fri Jan 04, 2008 5:04 pm

Everyone has already read all this on Colm or Facebook, right?
WUDC won by Lewis and Samir for Oxford A.
Sam Block of Camb top on tab, Adam Bott 4th (they won St Andrews Senior Schools together for Dulwich College in 2005)
Mhairi and Daniel in the Final.
Will Jones of Oxford (ex-Aberdeen Grammar) and James Dray (S Africa and Oxford) won Masters.
All of whom are quite delightful people who have done UK debating proud, as have Connie and Doug. Warmest congratulations all round.

I have to congratulate Connie and Doug, again, on a good show.

What worries me is, are they both graduating this year? Do we have the talent to keep this sort of thing up?

Trophy

Postby kdc4 on Mon Jan 07, 2008 12:45 pm

First, thanks loads to all of you for your support; it's been great to know that you've been cheering us on all along.

Also, we have not left Thailand empty-handed, so there will be a trophy for LPH.

Ooh tremendous! Is it one that Dickie can polish or something appropriately ethnic? - we had to have an export certificate for the'cultural treasure' presented to us in Peru!

Indeed, congratulations to St Andrews A, and indeed everyone for their efforts.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be very interested to hear of any interesting highlights from any of the debates - new and interesting arguments, and what have you
