Postby someone on Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:12 pm

When is the first debate of the year? Like, the date?

Now, correct me if I'm wrong (Oh, like I need to tell people that on this board), but I believe that we were planning on having the first debate to be an American-related motion on Sunday, the 19th of September, followed by the official Fresher's debate on Wednesday, the 22nd of September. That was the plan as of the end of last term.

Motions are "THW Recolonise America" (for the American debate, though that might change) and "THW Leave Before Breakfast" (for the Fresher's debate).

That sounds about right. I believe - quelle surprise - that I'm speaking in the Freshers' Debate.

You realise that a debate on "THW leave before breakfast", would give me a perfect opportunity to make a floor speech entirely about tea..

And, apparently, it will be featuring such other luminaries as m'good self. I will, however, be sober* for this one.

Go on, then, name the other luminaries that'll round out the line-up. Don't keep us in suspense.

I think you'll find that freshers week begins on Saturday 18th, and that classes then begin on Monday 27th. However, it is customary to have debates on the weekend prior to freshers week (formerly the overseas debate. Quite what they're going to call it now, I'll be intrigued to find out) and then a midweek debate (the freshers, or pre-sessional, debate) aimed generally (but not specifically or exclusively) at new, incoming students to allow them an opportunity to meet the society, and find out about debates.

Hope that helps.

Hey Bonnie - you might want to ask Peter - he's in town right now - pab8 - or he should be floating around (I'll tell him to stop by the Union when I speak to him tomorrow)

Bad news.

Flight's on the 25th.

Can't change it unless I can provide documentation of a family medical emergency of tragedy.

Given that neither of those things have happened and I do not wish to be found guilty of fraud/false statement, I will (unfortunately) be missing both the overseas debate and the Freshers' Debate.

Buggar that, you miss most of Fresher's week. I'd swim, though last time I was in the north sea it was bloody cold (though Potton was wearing tails, so the laughing kept me warm.)

Yes, I remember it well.
Although Potton had to be encouraged to swim by Magnus.

I'm having a blonde life. Or maybe just a drunken one where I get everyone I meet to dread my sight. On that point, I need more alcohol, I haven't had any since this morning.

And the next LPH debate is, of course, tomorrow evening (Wednesday). I trust I shall see all of you there (and thousands more, natch).
