Don't be decieved. I too would love it if all the music societies in St. Andrews could work harmoniously and not have bitter rivalries or fueds, but lets not be blind, people. I am a regular attendee at Alt Soc and Deviant Noise. I have been known to go to RockSoc, have friends there, and am a huge rock fan. All of which is irrelevent. People crave rivalries, they love to gossip and bitch in their nature. How this comes to light in our cases, is through hate campaigns, deceit, bitterness and general bitching. AltSoc is heavily polarised to the point of doom and one faction abhorrs deviant noise. Rocksoc is unjustifiably cliquey and has a faction that DOES hate Alt soc and Deviant Noise. Everybody actually especially themselves ( although I don't want to get into that).
There is serious prejudice in deviant noise too. You have the SKA-Punks, for example and I have heard a few that shall remain anonymous bitching heavily about all other music societies making it personal in many cases.
The point is that we have a pretty shitty music scene in general at St. Andrews. We don't get any big bands and very few legendary events. Note Bunker was not affiliated. Scubadoo was cancelled. The best we can come up with is a society ball...please.
Our only hope is for the music societies to stick together and work harmoniously. I tried to do this by sharing contact information for promoters with the three societies. Call me a pessimist, but jack all will come out of that one, i predict. If we really want societies to work better together, pool resources and budgets for cool things to happen we have to lead by example and action not just by sweeping the problem under the carpet and complaining. Lets hold monthly meetings between the presidents and vice presidents off all societies, maybe with a union rep there to dicuss this sorta stuff.
