tournament success!

Postby womble chris on Sun Aug 01, 2004 3:08 pm

well....not quite as amazing, in a $5+1 dollar tourney, yes, you did read that correct, a wholesome $5, i managed a 9th out of 120.... pleased but pretty worthless as scooped only 18 dollars, ie 12 dollars profit....woo hoo...not quite 3000 pounds but getting there!

questions over whether i did right things/advice:

at limits 300-600, i was dealt QQ and was first to act, i had 9000 in chips and was about 10th out of 30 odd....i went all in and everyone else folded, this was literally my last good pockets till i was blinded out pretty much....
i was thinking at the time as i was first to act whether:
a) to call, expecting a raise and then reaise them all in
or b)
to raise to say 3000 and then get say 1 caller and then go all in if a A or K doesnt flop

secondly, down to last 12 and top 10 get paid, 6 on each table
i had 4000 at levels 500-1000
most others on 15000 plus
on the other table two other players had about 2000 (ie about to die, and they did)

i was dealt 77

i folded positioned before the SB.

i thought id rather sneak 10th than a risky double up to 8000...would you have done the same?

anyways, im finding limit more annoying as i predicted as my good cards ave run dry, plus people are calling on wild cards and have caught me a lot, but i know thats hopefully short term will even out.

good luck all

chris

edited to include that top ten got paid

77 under the gun isn't a great hand, as you're always liable to be raised, and even reraised, whereas on the button if it's folded round then you'd almost certainly raise.

QQ is difficult, as since you're in early position if you go all in you show such strangth that unless someone has something like aa, kk or ak they are not going to call... unless they think you're bluffing... but even then I imagine they'd want something of a hand. I would say you made the right move, firstly because you're putting pressure on all the other players if they have something like 88 or kj etc, but also because if you'd put a small raise in and had a couple of callers only to see a ak6 flop you'd have basically wasted your initial raise. Personally I'd always commit early with QQ in the scenario you just described.

Nah, that tournament was a measilly £1,400 :P Other tournament wins/placements getting me up to £3k :P

As for Qs (or Js), in early position, massive raise is the only way to play it. Otherwise just chuck em, as you will pay for it if you dont.

AA

And always fold AA as I continually discover... including this week in Salford Casino when called by QQ who made a backdoor flush :S
