Subject: New semester, new shows: Evangelion + 1 feature per meeting
We now have the full schedule for the coming term:
* We will show one TV show this semester: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
* Every Monday of this term we will also show one feature film, or all the
episodes of one OVA (miniseries). First up is The Castle of Cagliostro.
* Every night this term, we will have two fixed start times. Evangelion
will begin at 8pm, while the film (or OVA) will begin at 9:30pm. These
times are firm, so if you don't want to see Eva you can turn up at 9:30
for the feature instead. (The two starts will remain until at least May.)
This is the detailed schedule for Hilary Term (Eva = Neon Genesis
Evangelion):
Date 8pm 9:30pm
9 February Eva eps 1-3 The Castle of Caglistro
23 February Eva eps 4-6 Ghost in the Shell
1 March Eva eps 7-9 Macross +
8 March Eva eps 10-12 Runouri Kensin (all episodes)
15 March Eva eps 13-15 Project A-Ko (all episodes)
22 March Eva eps 16-18 Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Here's some information on Evangelion and the first feature:
The Castle of Cagliostro
1980, 109 mins.
Who is the pretty girl driving the 2CV? Why is she wearing a wedding
dress? And why is she being chased by a car full of armed goons?
Little is beyond world-notorious master-thief, infamous womaniser, and
all-round good guy Lupin III. With his gun-toting accomplice Jigen and a
little yellow Fiat 500, robbing the national casino of Monaco is a piece
of cake. But taking on the grand-duchy of Cagliostro, home of the world's
greatest counterfeiting operation, is another story. No sooner have they
arrived than the girl and her pursuers race by. Lupin impulsively joins in
the chase; before long he's up to his neck in old friends, old flames, old
and dangerous enemies, and unfinished business that goes far beyond a
Fiat-500-ful of counterfeit notes. Has he met his match this time?
This wonderful action/comedy is based on the famous Lupin III manga by
'Monkey Punch', and its spin-off anime series. It's directed (and
co-written) by Hayao MIYAZAKI, who also directed Princess Mononoke (which
was shown last semester) and Nausicaa (scheduled for the 22nd of March).
Neon Genesis Evangelion
1995, 26 episodes
In the year 2000, a meteorite strike destroys Antarctica and causes a
worldwide environmental and humanitarian catastrophe - this is dubbed
"Second Impact". Fifteen years later, the earth is threatened by a series
of mysterious alien beings, the Angels, whose aim is to bring about a
Third Impact. Nerv, a special body under the control of the UN, is created
to defeat the Angels and prevent Third Impact. To do so it develops the
Evas, giant robots with the ability to penetrate the forcefield which
makes the Angels nigh-invulnerable. The Evas can only be piloted by
children born exactly nine months after Second Impact, children who are
now 14 years old.
Every sentence in the paragraph above is a lie.
Shinji IKARI is the chosen pilot of Evangelion Unit 1, the most powerful
of the Evas. He's also the son of Gendo IKARI, the head of NERV. Shiji's
unique ability to get Unit 1 to function may be humanity's last best hope
for survival. Too bad Shinji himself is barely functional; his childhood
has left him withdrawn, clinically depressed, and bitterly estranged from
his father. NERV's other Evas and personnel have their own ... issues ...
and the Angels keep coming, one after another. What if NERV stumbles? What
if it doesn't?
Evangelion examines depression, loneliness, friendship, love, hatred and
the human condition through the medium of giant-mecha anime. But that
description doesn't do justice to the series' lighter moments, or its
occult crypto-theology, or its often riveting (and disturbing) action
sequences. Come and see for yourself. In my opinion the series sags a
little around the middle of its run, but everything comes together by the
end...
Eva will run through this term and the next. The week after the TV series
is completed, we will show the two Evangelion feature films, which recap
the TV series and then retell the events of the final two episodes. That
should be on 3 May.
Finally, this is what we have pencilled in for the rest of the
academic year:
* We won't show Eva during our two meetings over spring break (29 March &
5 April). Instead we'll fill the 8pm slot with something else, probably
the OVA Vampire Princess Myu. We haven't decided what will go in the 9:30
slots yet.
* In Trinity term, we'll continue showing Eva at 8 and other things (to be
decided) at 9:30 until Eva TV is finished. There probably won't be a 9:30
showing on 3 May, the night we show the Evangelion movies.
* We haven't any plans for reading week (10 May meeting) or exams
(meetings on 17 and 24 May) yet.
* If you have films or OVAs you would like us to show in some of those
empty slots, drop us a line.
