I don't usually buy manga, because it's expensive, and I'd just rather buy anime. But at Otakon, I bought several books:
Gyo by Junji Ito - a horror type manga
And some yuri titles:
Yuri Monogatari Volume 2 - an anthology of stories by Western manga creators
Worksby Eriko Tadeno
Rica 'tte Kanji!? by Rica Takashima
TokyoPop and VIZ were giving out manga samplers, and some of the stories in those books look really promising. >_< Another expense.
Manga definitely seems to be way more popular than Western comic books lately. The major book stores all have manga sections that are much larger than sections devoted to comic book trade paperbacks. Manga is also better value for money. The average manga delivers at least 70+ pages for about $9.99, black and white. But your average comic book will give you 22 (color) pages of story for about $4. Of course, I think the equalizer comes with comic book trade paperbacks, because those deliver decent value for money with colour pages.
