Isn't it great how we've alienated everyone else from this thread by purely talking about the joys of hardcore?

i guess to another question that could be asked would be: what's your favourite band of those that you found out about within the last year?

i guess some of the contenders for me would be Assemblage 23, Nick Cave (of who i hadn't properly heard anything of until this year), My Bloody Valentine & Evanescence's debut was pretty ear-catching too.

however the outright winner of best recently heard band this year for me would have to be Big Star. a band who don't get much of a mention but who have been very much influential, influencing the likes of Radiohead & Nirvana. OK Computer & In Utero being Lps that seem to best reveal the influence.

Blessed Benediction, I have to disagree with your claim that Big Star rarely get a mention. They are one of the most talked about bands of all time. Few "Greatest Albums of All Time" fail to include at least one of theirs, and the number of bands that claim them as an influence are legion...

I do agree with Cain though. The Delgados are a great band, and have made four consistently excellent albums.

whilst not strictly (or at all even) a band, more of a whole sub-genre type of thing (i decided not to start a new thread called 'what sub-genres you have discovered (recently?)'

where was i? anyway, i found this stuff called 'Goa Trance'. it isn't as bad as it sounds. it's psychedelic trance music apparently, although it sounds very dark. i usually think of trance as that lightweight stuff that used to always appear on the radio a couple of years ago. but this Goa stuff is far from it.

not strictly rock, but anyone who likes that bleepy shite (ebm, industrial, darkwave) may well like it. i'm probably a bit behind the times & everyone else probably knew about all this years ago but still.

vaguely more interesting is the fact that i found out about this sub-genre from reading about ex-underage porn star Traci Lords. Traci who had previously sang on the Manics' Little Baby Nothing later made a non-pop dance record with the Goa Trance outfit Juno Reactor.

anyway if anyone likes stuff like Paul Oakenfold's better remixes & Run Lola Run type of stuff then they should like it. 'tis good.

'Cocteau Twins are better than BTFABG, check them out. Scotlands finest.'

good call. from what i've read they sound good. & Fraser's vocals on Massive Attack's Mezzanine were a highlight of a terrific Lp.

Very true. Massive Attack are true genius in trip-hop form. Check out 'Treasure' by Cocteau Twins, it's a stunning album. And if you like it check out 'Laughing Stock' by Talk Talk and '( )' by Sigur Ros.

I discovered a band down the back of my sofa last week. It was elastic. And sadly not very humorous.

One Minute Silence are rather good. Well I like them cos the vocalist has a beard and wears big baggy pants, just like me!

Oh, and Aphex Twin rules, not a duff album amongst the lot. And yes I do include Drukqs in that sweeping generalisation.

The Comsat Angels from that pillar of music Sheffield again. quality stuff. Stephen Fellows sure knows how to play a guitar. the drums are brilliant as well & the keyboards. so in other words the band was quite good.

heard a track by an outfit called Blank & Jones. it's a bit rubbish. a cover of The Cure's A Forest. maybe i heard it at too low a volume but it sounds like just some ok beat with a few run of the mill electro-'goth' atmospherics over the top. they even roped in Robert Smith for some reason. he sings something at the beginning that is so treated that you can't make out what it is he's singing.

he sings for about 20 seconds at the most & that's his entire vocal contribution. once that's over the track just lurches on with the same monotonous beats & atmospherics for another 6 minutes. it might go down a treat in 'goth' clubs but that can't hide the fact that it's tosh.

much like a lot of new gothic electronica it's lifeless dull & so formulaic that it's not worth bothering with. there's been a lot of bandwagon jumping since futurepop started to take off. judging by some of the stuff i've heard it's not been such a good thing.

on a better note. if you get disillusioned with the contrived sounds of some of the latest ebm acts you can always turn to the likes of Juno Reactor & Astral Projection. it's not ebm but it treads similar ground & is somewhat better in some ways. the lack of vocals being a good thing in this case. dark, trippy & danceable. somewhat refreshing.

This is an entire record label rather than a single band but has anyone heard "Dub Side of the Moon" by The Easy Star All Stars?

Absolute genius, it's a regae reworking of the whole of "Dark Side of the Moon" (the Pink Floyd album, for the incredibly oblivious amoung you), suprisingly faithful and actually comes close to the near-perfection of the original (the shouting man on 'Time' spoils it though). That was one I bought 'blind', as it where, but I guess it doesn't really count 'cause I knew the original so well.

In the same vein, if anyone's seen the new 'The Italian Job' then, firstly, I share your pain, but also, who was the cover of Money by that they used so much in it? I hung around to see the music credits but instead of giving a band name it listed all the guys involved, one of whom was Slash but the rest I didn't reconise.

the IMDB (www.imdb.com), which is the font of all knowledge for films, only lists it as Money by Roger Waters.

that doesn't sound very helpful. i would hang around virgin megastores looking for the name on the back of the soundtrack when it comes out.

they're a band called Velvet Revolver consisting of Slash & Duff McKagan (of vintage G 'n R), Matt Sorum (of a little less vintage G 'n R) & Scott Weilland (ex-Stone Temple Pilots). they may not have been named as such on the credits as i believe they may not have settled on a name at the time. other names that they'd had were the Project, & Reloaded.

funnily enough when looking for said info i found a funny ol' story about how one time on CD:uk Slash had described a time when some porn star had tried to give him oral sex in a club & then went on to say that a pet iguana had "bit the fuck" out of his hand. in his justification he blamed Cat Deeley for supposedly bringing the subject up. quality.

I haven't really discovered any news bands recently as I'm going through a David Bowie infatuation phase. Stunning artist (well, in places, he lost it after 1980 but he's gradually getting it back)
