Battle Reports

Thought it might be nice for members to keep track of their glorious victories (and defeats, but we won't mention them). I played the Dark Lord of Scotland yesterday, 1st in combat patrol and then a 2000 point 40k game.

Combat Patrol

Stormtroopers (me) vs Zealots and sisters

I lost this one because my eversor assassin was beaten to death by zealots (wtf?!) and my stormtroopers can't hit sod all. Or move through cover.

2000 Points

Grey Knights vs Witch Hunters

Alex seriously outnumbered me here (which was normal) but had few long range heavy weapons, take them out and advantage me... Unfortunatly Alex not only did Alex get 1st turn, but destroyed all my vehicles the first time he shot at them, leaving his exorsist free to shoot at my valuable terminators. A close game in the end, though it would have been a lot worse if I hadn't killed a lot of stuff right at the end of the game.

I like Exorcists.

I also should be less panicky about the Retributors. Shove them forward, prime the multi-meltas. Don't hope the for will simply walk up to you and give you the chance.

COme on people, gloating is fun. Join in. :D

Well, as you knnow, me and Dan play BFG quite regularly. The other week, we had a damn close one.

Planetary Assault

Tau Commerce Protection Fleet versus the Orky Planetary Defence Fleet

A nicely sized game, 1500pts, and damn good fun. Dan's orky deployment almost ruined my chances. His setup was almost perfect, meaning regardless which way I chose to go I wouldn't be fast enough to outrun *and* outmanouver his fleet before they catch me. This meant I simply couldn't bypass his fleet on AAF. The CPF is light on hit-points meaning even incedental fire can be potentially diastrous for me. Fortunately they get an extra dice on All Ahead Full Special Orders and benefit from a +1Ld modifier when attempting 'movement' special orders [Burn Retros, All Ahead Full, Come to New Heading]. This meant I could try my best at outplaying him by jinking through his biggest guns.

I sent my Custodian, all six of my transports and an Emissary Class Light Cruiser off down my right flank hoping against hope that a few may make it through on an off chance. My two Protectors and my Hero Class Cruiser joined my flight of Castellan Class Heavy Escorts and Warden Class Gunships [2 Ion Cannons!] in flying straight into the guns of the enemy fleet.

Braving a couple of barrages of Orky long range fire, and scoring only a hit or two with Manta Missile Destroyers and long range missile Salvos against those pesky Orks, I set my wave up for what is hoped would be a critical alpha strike against the three Orky Kroozas and singularly massive Battleship bearing down on me. Opening fire with 18 shots of Ion Cannon Strength against the Orks prow, adding a further barrage of Railgun Fire, a flight of Manta Missile Destroyers and a hetfy amount of Missiles to clear a path to the planet, we made our plans.

Once the blast cleared, they were left with a couple of crippled and braced capital ships, but otherwise still unscathed. Braving the miniscule amount of retaliatory fire[simply due to the orks being braced and/or crippled, not gone], we came out largely okay. Now having my three Cruisers and handfull of escorts facing almost nose-to-nose with the fearsome prows of the Orks, the Kor'el of the left flank issued the order.

"Engine Room, give us full power to the Engines! All Ahead Full, give us all you have!"

A nice extra 5d6cm onto the speed of the squadrons took them safely out of range of the Orks and half-way towards the planet, hopefully far enough out to escape final retribution.

As this was transpiring, my right flank was falling miserably. The Custodian was crippled protecting the Transports, with the Emissary laterly falling to the might of the Orky Battlecruiser. Wave after wave of Orky torpedo ploughed through the planetary assault craft. Driving headlong past the Ork escort flottilla and pair of carriers, the Custodian escaped to the other side of the Ork lines. Unfortunately, she was still not to safety, and Kor'O Bork'an Kra'we Xis'or gave the order to fire the Gravitic Drives, disengaging the mighty Battleship and carrying them to safety, having bough the left flank some time to reach the planet.

With a second bout of full power to the engines, the Kor'el on the left flank drove headlong towards the planet. Knowing that they would have to penetrate the high-orbit planetary defences, he prepared to make his final assault of the planet, now with only a surviving force of three capital ships and a pair of escorts. The orky fleet set to come about. Dropping from full power and preparing for atmospheric entry, the assault force closed on the planetary defences. Entirely obliterating them with wave upon wave of intense Ion Cannon fire, they cleared the way for final insertion.

The orks now having fully manouvered around and using their large escort Armada to make a last ditch attempt at crippling the assault capacity of the remaining fleet, moved onto full power. A handful of rampships succeeded in driving headlong into the flank of the Hero Class Cruiser, crippling it, though loosing three of their own number in the process. Now securely in range such that they could drop into low orbit of the planet, the assault force drove into the atmosphere.

Swiftly loosing altitude, they reached optimum assault distance. The remaining Manta Missile Destroyers, Moray Assault Ships and Orca Dropships prepped to leave the assault force. Knowing the Orks were sufficiently far behind them to maintain a significant bombardment of the planet, and having caused enough damage to the orbiting fleet to prevent total obliteration of the landed force in orbital bombardment, the strike craft now began a hit and run campaign above the planet. Striking best where needed, and fleeing the greater might of the remaining Ork fleet.

The day was won. A close victory. Had the assault ships went any slower it would have been likely the Orks could have caught them before low atmosphere and anhiallated the assault force before it's assault had truly begun.

The assault dropped enough troops, etc, to capture a large part of the planet’s resources. Ongoing battles for control of the world will rage for months, even years.

End Result:
Tau Commerce Protection Fleet-6 Assault Points.
Mariginal Win to the Commerce Protection Fleet.

Wayhey! :D

The latest edition of the Commerce Protection Fleet as created and developed by folks on the SG forum, *not* SG itself can be seen here. It's very nice, even if I do say so myself...
