Science students!

I've just been re-elected to the position of SRC Member for Science Faculty. I'd like very much to open up more avenues of communication between Science students and the Students' Association.

What are the needs and concerns of Science students? Is the University biased towards Arts students? Do you ever find yourself running around trying to organise something just because the University is being disorganised? Do you find it difficult to get hold of all the resources you need for your studies? Well let me know!

Are you not getting the money you are asking for, or are you not asking for enough? What you get given is based on the budget you submit at the beginning of the year.

This isn't strictly a representational issue, though. If there's a distinct problem with society funding, you should speak to the Societies Officer, Ben Nicholson. His email is ban5

You could help us computer scientists lobby ITS to change the draconian network measures.

There are a number of exceptionally valid reasons why a comp sci student (not disregarding everyone elses of course) would need to use various protocols, SSH, ftp to the department from ResNet.

I for one have an SH project which is going to be running for 4 months on some server somewhere. Over christmas the only access I will likely be able to get to it is remote. The current ResNet set up does not allow this. Even after christmas I'll need to check on it about twice a day, something that I could do in two seconds from my room if the network wasn't locked tighter than a virgins nickers.

I know this is late on, but more subscriptions to scientific journals in the library would very nice. I am tired of having to use outdated books for a subject when the exact paper I need is in a journal we don't have access to.

I would specificaly like the IEEE journals, though some people might like some more.

It is easy to find books on art subjects through the library, but science books are harder to get and often out of date.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, but the port restrictions are weaker in IT Classrooms than on ResNet, you may have more luck there.

In maths we have SSH access to the fortran servers, couldn't they do the same for comp sci servers?

Quaternary Science you can't access 'Quaternary Science Reviews"?

Environmental science you can't access 'Nature'?

Neuroscience you can't access 'Neuron'?

Psychology you can't access either the 'American/British Journal of Psychology'?

The list goes on...

Your right, see my post (third one up) I'm in total agreement. A greater amount of science in the arts biased library would be extremely useful.
