"Just to let you know I'll pass your query on to the Network people and
we'll see what they say. You should be receiving some information from IT
Services within about the next week to tell you the results of their
discussion over which utilities to allow and which to deny. "

Oh well....least it ain't outright rejection

I got a similar reply about a week ago...

Thankyou for your message. As you can imagine you are not the only person
who has contacted us on this issue, and it is one which is very much under
review at present. If you were here last year you will know that there
were a few problems with resnet. These were partly due to inadequate
bandwidth and partly to the fact that the network was something of a free
for all. We have increased the bandwidth this year, and are also asserting
greater control over the network. Deciding what to allow and what to
forbid is not a trivial matter, and the work involved in making these
decisions will have to take its place among other pressing priorities for
our systems and networks experts. So I cannot say right now that we will
open up the ports that you require for your gaming activities.

I appreciate that this is a disappointing answer. We *may* be able to take
a more relaxed attitude later on.

I got a 2nd reply to my earlier email today - am emailing back and forth with the guy - might look into the possibility of ITS having some link either to these boards or to a site or something to increase awareness of network gaming.

This being the same ITS that couldn't tell me the make and model of the network card the sold me. Don't they keep ANY records whatsoever.

Me: "I'm trying to reinstall the network card I bought off you but I don't have any docs or drivers. Can you tell me what model it will be?"

ITS: "You can find out more about your network card by running winipcfg."

Me: "No I can't, as I said the card isn't installed. Windows can't find a suitable driver."

ITS: "Ah, you need to put your driver disk in and tell windows to look on that."

Me: "I don't have my driver disk, if you just tell me what make and model of card your where selling in sept2000 I can go and download the correct drivers."

ITS: "Erm. If you bring the computer in we can have a look at the card for you."

Me: "I've had a look, there's nothing on it, no label, no serial, the main chip doesn't even have anything printed on it."

ITS: "We'd be able to tell."

Me: "Wouldn't it be easier just to look in you records and see what you where selling than for me to lug my PC to you offices, you to stare at a completely featurless card and then me to lug it back again.

ITS: "No."

Me: "Right... I'd like to buy an ethernet adapter for use on the university resnet please."

Nice man in computer shop: "That'll be £12 pounds."

Me: *Dies of shock of recieveing a straight answer from an IT professional*

Good old ITS, I think it's just a fact of life that if they don't connect you - then you're doomed. The helpdesk really needs to change its name.
