Multiplayer games over resnet

Postby Senethro on Thu Sep 15, 2005 6:53 pm

Just to get the ball rolling, what games are we playing this year? I'll go wherever everyone else goes but I'm a bit tired of the wolf. CS:S maybe?

Everyone, post up what games you're interested in playing.

For those of you wondering what wolf is, its Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory: a free to download stand-alone game in a WW2 setting. Team based FPS somewhat related to Return to Castle Wolfenstein but much less crap. It was made by Splash Damage who have a retail sequel of sorts on the way called Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

The reason for the popularity of wolf was because its free, reasonably low spec, not Counterstrike (faster walkspeed, less weapon damage, less scattering of shots with recoil). Its rare than more than about 5 peolpe have any one retail FPS and want to play it so wolf has been sucessful because everyone can get it, everyone can run it and everyone can play it.

That said, guys, haven't you both played wolf for 2 years now? Not sick of it yet? :/ I only want the headache of serving it if we're going to have good games.

As soon as my wolf groups on MSN repopulate after the summer then there'll probably be a very big IM about it. No doubt some people will not be interested anymore and I'll have to delete them, I would appreciate any efforts you can make to spreading the game to freshers.

If any wolfers are sinner administrators they could perhaps put up an advert on the home page with ip numbers and times etc.

Does anyone want to write a (good) frontpage article on the wolf? Preferably a long term player. It should act as a sort of advertisement.

On the Beach
An Invitation to War

Sitting below the sheer cliffs, the heavy grey sea at your back, you look around at the men beside you. On the left medics prep their needles, on the right a team of anxious engineers. An order is shouted and, as one the soldiers break cover. You round the cliff and are met by a lethal wall of fast moving lead. Above is the concrete fort of the axis army, defended by machine guns and mortars. To break through it looks impossible but onward the soldiers rush. Engineers race to build a ramp up, but one of them takes a bullet. Medics dash to him and the others continue building, as they must to survive. In the enemy bunker you see the guns that felled the engineer, already being trained on their next victim. Readying a grenade you charge into the line fire, lob the small package neatly through the slit and see the gunmen inside vanish in the explosion. The guns are silenced, buying time for the engineers to finish the ramp. Soldiers storm up and you hear the crackle of gunfire receding into the enemy fort. Your actions have helped the men get closer to their objective but you miss the storming of the cliff-top. You are lying on the rocks bleeding your last, knowing your sacrifice was not in vain.

Thirteen seconds later you make your way up the ramp in a different body, perhaps as an engineer or maybe you prefer saving people as a medic. Or maybe you just want to play with the mighty flame-thrower. However you re-incarnate (we call it re-spawn) you are quickly back in the action and putting on another heroic show in the small theatre (of war) that is “Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory”.

This game is open to all in St Andrews and the more people who play, the better the battles get. We are inviting everyone who reads this to come join us, it doesn’t have to be every night and the game is free to download. All you need to do is visit the WiredSoc message board, the information and relevant hyperlinks you need will be posted under the Wolf: ET Start-up [or something TBC] thread.

Give it a try, it’s free, easy to play, fun and you don’t even need to leave your room. See you there, and remember; Your Country Needs YOU!

That is my draft submission as the frontpage article, any comments and suggestions will be helpful, but do it quickly so I can post it up before the end of freshers week. (Tips on posting it up would be useful too). If you have another article, then post it up so we can vote on the best. We should try to get this done by Wednesday afternoon/ evening, in my opinion, lest we all decide not to do it. If there are no responses by Wednesday at 11pm I'll assume its ok and post it up.

We also need a thread set up for the noobs to go to with the links etc.

You've got the directions to wiredsoc, no problem.

Update: the server lives and works with people who are in bath. However, my creation does not yet obey me and refuses to run etpromapscripts.

Edit: update: I win at wolf server admin. I now have a fully working server that also will now run the scripts I tell it to. Gentlemen, the back door on seawall battery is now demolishable and there are a few extra spawns about the place.
