Buying a Laptop

Postby Cain on Wed Nov 24, 2004 2:27 pm

I'm thinking about getting a laptop to replace my PC

I'm looking to at least match my one with 256mb of RAM and a 2400+ 2.00Ghz Athlon with a 60G hard drive, and a second hard drive of 6G, a DVD drive, and a CD burner.

Any suggestions of what sort of brands or models I should be looking at? and how easy is it to upgrade laptops once you've bought them?

Thanks

Are AlienWare any good? They certainly look very cool and are top spec.

Don't go for an Athlon.

Get more than 256meg RAM.

That is all.

As i recently got one after search hundreds of sites and magazines here is some useful hints

1. Very good site for finding on to suit u http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/computing/ ... s/laptops/
2. If ur going 2 run XP get at least 512Mb ram
3. Never buy anything from dell
4. I personally like athlon and they can match pentium any day
5. If ur looking for good spec really cheap go to www.tiny.com

3. Never buy dell desktops - their laptops are excellent, and the warranties are second to none

I'm afriad I would have to disagree with that, in the past year I know at least 10 people who have had to have their Dell laptop hard drive replaced because of hard drive failure, and I also know of someone who had a motherboard fail twice (tho that might just be bad luck). I would never got with Dell, or recommend them to anyone, not their laptops anyway.

I had a friend whose DVD drive failed on there laptop, and dell said take out the drive and leave it for a courier to turn up, they never told her how to take the drive out and the courier never turned up. Bloody good service that is!

5. never go to tiny - that's like asking to have your ass stretched open with a device normally used by fire crews, and having an elephant pump you with a gallon of it's love juice. never go to tiny.

Best. Advice. Ever.

as for tiny i totally agree but they do have the cheapest around and as long as u get bits form know suppliers (pentium, nVidia, etc.) I dont see a problem.
Fair enough i would never get one myself but if u are short of cash
