What spec is your PC?

Postby RichZ on Wed Mar 30, 2005 9:32 pm

Just wondering really what the average spec is at the moment, I think mine is a bit old (and hence am upgrading soon) but just out of interest what is everyones spec?

I'll start:

ASUS A7V333
Athlon XP 1700+ SocA @1.47GHz
512MB Crucial RAM
Geforce4 MX420 (64MB)
Maxtor 40GB @7200rpm
Maxtor 80GB @7200rpm
LG 17" CRT

(Will hopefully be getting [soonish]:
A8N-SLI Deuluxe - nForce4 PCI-E
Athlon 64 3200+ Soc939
BFG Geforce 6600GT 128MB PCI-E 2xDVI-I VO
1GB Crucial PC3200 DDRRAM ECC Unbuffered CL3 (whatever that means...)
not sure if to exchange with current parts or to make new - prob to make new PC, so will prob add some DVD writer & big HDD. Not sure on PSU thoguh - any suggestions on make and power rating?)

All depends on which boxen :-

spinner ->

(PDC) 1.0Ghz Celeron Tualatin 130nano chip, 512Mb RAM, Silicon Image udma6 adapter. 3 * Maxtor Diamondmax 160G 9+ w/8Mb cache(Raid5), a 8Mb 9+ 120Gig drive and a 80gig drive and yes, hacking up fan brackets over the summer for the 35° temps was fun, Ultra2 scsi card with dds-2 tape streamer. FC2/2.6.10 OS.

delphinus ->

generic compaq deskpro 400Mhz pII with 256Meg pc100 RAM runs 2kserver. 6gig disk

Dusky ->

(Internal router) small form-factor compaq deskpro. pII350 with 512Meg pc100 RAM. redhat 8 routing and inet services, 3 nics. 6gig disk, need to update this to FC2 like the rest of my linux boxens.

stenella ->

(media workbench). win2k pro. Palamino 1.4 with 512Meg pc133ddr RAM, IBM 60G GXP-120, dvd-drive, cd-rw, sb live platinum and a 3dlabs wildcat vp760, s3 pci vga card for 2nd monitor, Hauppauge pci-pvr tv card

Bottlenose ->

(border gateway) pII 266, 64Mb ram runs FC2 w/Kernel 2.6.6. Inet gateway through Prism2 (intersil) wireless LAN linux driver and hw external modem (56k, yummy).

lagenorynchus ->

Hmm..not thought of a new use for this one yet. same spec as delphinus. pII400/256/6gig

Orca ->

(workstation) 512k cache enabled Thorton ( barton-"thoroughbred-b") xp athlon @ 225*10. 1024meg pc225ddr ;-). 2*18G 10,000rpm ultra160 scsi hdd's on an adaptec 19160 card, Ultra wide scsi card feeding a 10gig ultra3 scsi drive for scratch/swap/scanning etc, 3 port Firewire-400 card, Abit nf-7 Nforce2 mainboard with Radeon 9800se -> 9800XT. old udma33 52X cd, sony g200 17" fd trinitron and a Hornet travan-4.

Also responsible for

Whiskey ->

(Parents workstation) duron 1100, 224M pc100 Ram, win2kpro, oooold ati rage pro 64, 3gig disk, nic, etc, ect.

Rich, any reason why you need ECC ram? ECC is server error checking ram, so unless you need yearlong uptime, or have memory issues, I would have thought non-ecc would have been cheaper.

Hope he gets paired sticks then. BTW Rich, try running them at CAS-2 if you get them, or try and get 2's to start with. RAM on mine is generic pc-2700 2.5,3,3,7 running at 2,3,3,11 (pc-3600 equiv, *2 for dual chan)

also - I think the thread question was just for your gaming/main machine - no-one really needs to know about a pentium2 linux box that sees barely any usage.

Evidence for this hypothesis please.

My only piece of decent computing equipment is a 17" Philips TFT... ...sigh...

On the note of getting EEC RAM - I didnt realise what that meant but thanks for letting me know - it's really annoying trying to buy new components as they all have loads of numbers and letters on them which dont make too much sense and isn't always too easy to find out what it all means! There's also too much choice!

I might instead get two sticks of Kingston 512MB 184pin DIMM PC3200 DDR RAM Non-parity CL3 (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/compone ... klinx=2NDG). There was the option of 2x that (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/compone ... klinx=2NDJ) but was cheaper to get 2 seperatelly - anyone sure what the difference is, and which is best? Also while I'm asking, any thoughts on best DVD +-R/RW make? Again - there's too much choice!

Those "matched pair" sets are not really that important. Supposedly it means that the all the RAM chips came from the same wafer or batch and so their characteristics are better synch'd when on dual-channel memory controllers (nforce 420 etc)than random sticks. Two ordinary sticks are just as good as matched pairs.

The CL (CAS Latency) determines the time taken for the memeory controller to switch from reading one column (CAS = Column Address Strobe) in the memory cell to the next, CL3 = 3 (iirc microsecond) delay between switching from one column to the next, CL2 = 2 microseconds. What it means is that your RAM can feed data to your CPU quicker, and every little helps in this arena.

Cool, cheers. It is annoying how components have complicated names but it's hard to find out what it all means!

On another note, (sorry to go on and on...) but should it be straight forward to install new motherboard, CPU & graphics card, to the hard drives i have now? Because I was thinknig XP might throw a wobbley as I'd be changing the three main components of my PC and it'd think it was being moved to new PC, which I think it doesn't like!? Would I have to reinstall from my XP "CD"?

I dare you to name a better laptop than those made by Apple!

You'd be surprised at just how good the PowerBooks are for gaming, I can play UT2004 just fine on mine and Doom3 is coming out soon...

How do you find out your computer specs? Where on the computer is the information stored?

If you want very basic specs right-click on 'My Computer' and click on properties. There should be information about your processor and RAM at the bottom of the tab that it opens.

For more detail there's a program you can use, but i've totally forgotten the name of it right now...
