Bit Torrents

Postby Brother Munro on Sun Apr 24, 2005 3:13 pm

I'm having trouble getting bittorrent to work (I'm on resnet), is this me or just another case of the Uni blocking the relevant ports?

bit torrent is not blocked on resnet, just most of the ports that the popular trackers out there use are. if a site had a tracker which was on an unblocked port then it would work fine, I imagine.

And which ports aren't blocked (apart from the obvious ones), may I ask? I have been looking into this, and it seems that 99% of the ports on my computer are blocked. If you know of any that aren't then please let me know (I'm begging you!)

Email works fine for me. As to your question Si a port scan (on my IP) reveals:

Open Port: 21 ftp
Open Port: 80 http
Open Port: 427 svrloc
Open Port: 515 printer
Open Port: 548 afpovertcp
Open Port: 631 ipp
Open Port: 3031 eppc
Open Port: 3689 daa

Port Scan has completed ...

In other words no open ports for anything much really.

What open ports did it miss? also where is the machine you scanned and where did you scan it from?

@ Nickel: I scanned my own computer, which is in DRA over all the ports availible. Give me an IP or URL and I can scan other computers as well.

@ amac: I don't know what email program you use but I'll try and help. For webmail the incoming and outgoing mail server (for me) is psych.st-andrews.ac.uk, you'll need to alter psych to your own server (bute, whatever) with a POP account type. Rest of the info is user name password, full email address etc. Connection is through port 110, though you shouldn't have to alter this.

Is this for a hotmail or st-andrews email account (or something else)?

Strange. Well I have no idea why it isn't working then because I haven't had any problems with it on or off Resnet. Might just be Outlook playing up again. Check the port settings, otherwise can't really help (sorry).

i've got bittorrent working on resnet, but i'm slightly wary about posting details incase the port is shut down. so far only two of us (that i know about) using it, but it could look suspicious with a couple of hundred people all running a few hundred kbps each way on one port.

Oh come on! You can't just dangle that in front of us and then go away without saying anything. This is what the private message system is for ;)

I have heard of a couple of ppl getting it working using a high port number, somewhere in the 50000 range I think it was, but then it only really worked with some of the torrents. Normally I would be begging to find out the port number, but since I'm going home next week and I'l have full unrestricted 2Mbit broadband access, I think I can wait until then.

Because DEC 25 = OCT 31.
