Anyone know where I can get a decent base unit with pre-installed XP for around £300?

There are probablly loads of places. I've recently build my own PC, and used Dabs, CCL, & Overclockers. Some people have apparentlly had issues with Dabs before though (with deliver dates etc) but they've been fine for me, same with Overclockers I think, prob best to check out reviews yourself.)

But those sites are here:

http://www.cclonline.com/product-catego ... gory_id=80
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ ... stems.html

There's also Novatech which some of my mates have used (I haven't, but I've heard it's good), their PCs are here:

There is ofcourse shops like PC World (but expensive and should probablly try else where), or Comet etc.

It depends on what you want to use it for really. For gaming, to buy new, you'd probablly need to spend a bit more than that, most people prefer Athlon CPUs, and get a half decent graphics card. But all that adds up, so it's up to you.

Others more in the know might be able to help out a bit more with suggestions, but what you'll use it for would help.

PS when you say "base unit" do you already have monitor? If you've got old PC might be able to use more from it too, like CD ROM, case, etc...?

I much prefer eBuyer to Dabs, and also, the P4 is better than the Athlon XP, in my experience, but the 64 is rather good.

Chers guys,

I ended up settling for this bad boy:

Which I thought wasn't a bad deal.

That should be alright - but spend £100-120 on a new graphics card - a geforce 6600GT perhaps - because the 6200 is really quite painfully bad. It shares memory with the main system. (the 128mb quoted means it will borrow a maximum of 128mb from main RAM)

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just shell out £40 on more RAM?

Sorry, I know I'm a bit late. But this seems good:

Needs a decent graphics card for £100. Does anyone still buy software? :P (I'll do you XP for a fiver :))
