Holy crap!

I have an Athlon 850, 256MB of RAM and a Radeon 7500, and I still need to put it at the lowest detail settings to make it playable.

Oh, but it's still pretty, so pretty.

I have a dual P3 1Gig with a 128MB GeForce 3, and it seems to run pretty well on that with most of the detail on...

I have been waiting for this game soooooo long... Well, at least my finals aren't for another 6 months, plenty of time >;}

Tell me about it!
When it first came out I thought, "I MUST get that" then after paying £30 or whatever it was I found, as you have that you need to run it, dissapointingly, with low graphic details etc.

I've got a Athlon 1700, 256Mb RAM and GeForce 4 MX 420 (not best but still...!), so I thought it would work pretty well on full graphics. How wrong I was! Even on the 'middlish' settings I still get frames jumping sometimes!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! How annoying!

RichZ from what I have seen of the recommended specs your computer should be fine, maybe its not set up right?

It'll just be the GF4MX that'll be holding it back a bit. Just drop a few more settings and it'll be fine.

Man that speaks from arse

I've got a Athlon 1700, 256Mb RAM and GeForce 4 MX 420

That should be well up to spec for this title. You say Athlon 1700 so I presume an AthlonXP but you dont say the ram type so I'll assume PC2100. The G4MX aint going to help with that Doom3 alpha but is more then enough for a game of UT2003.

Check the aperture size of the AGP bus (set it as high as stable, probably 128MB with 256mb ram),

Permanant swap file (virtual memory) of 768mb,

latest drivers (www.nvidia.com) this is the detonator 40's, and for gods sake, turn OFF anti-alaising.

also turn off any other resident services like firewalls, virus checkers blah blah blah.

Use msconfig (from Run in the start menu) to kill off unnessecery programs / services at startup.

Via or SIS chipset? Update mobo drivers, especially for a via board, this gets a lot of extra power from no where.

If all else fails: www.overclockers.co.uk
Their prices are only just off trade (about 5% profit margin after VAT) and throw more RAM at your system.

Oh, and stop running it at 1600x1200 32 bit. I have a 2ghz P4 with 1 Gb ddr pc2100, cas2, Gforce2 64mb ddr(the weak point), winxp and 7200rpm IGM 120GXP drives. 1024x768 gets me 120 FPS at 32bit which is more important then funky hi-reso mode.

Take two pills and if you get any problems, call me in the morning

OCUK is great, but also remember that WiredSoc can get stuff for our members at trade prices. And we don't charge postage. Contact wired-purchasing@wired.st-and.ac.uk for details.

Dude, seriously, think upgrade. What you got? Voodoo1?

hmmm quelle supplier of componants do you use?

At work we price match between Spire, Realtime, MR Systems, Ingram, Target and Tarran? Cant remember the name of the last lot, just the sales Reps' name. We used to use AGP but they got in a hissy fit with us.

A word of warning, DDR RAM (pc2100) shot up price three weeks ago and hasnt stopped going up, so get it now or wait till january when the price will start to drop again. The problem was DELL (bastards) bought large shipments from hynix and samsung, buggering us mortals up. Its that old christmas chesnut again.

Anyway, I'm talking about work so my twitch is coming back, enjoy thyselves and really dude, chuck that P100 you are using

See the first post in this topic. Not top-of-the-range by any means, but also tcertainly not low-specced. I can run Max Payne at its highest resolution, which was pretty much the benchmark at my last upgrade.

Now having had some time to play it properly I can say this:

WOW

It looked good before, but the whole immersion factor is beginning to take over now... Although the 5.1 DTS helps >;}

I also heard that you couldn't play it on a TFT because of the mtion blur... Well, to this I say BOLLOCKS... I can frag just fine on my monitor!!!

Although I do sometimes encounter a little bit of slowdown randomly for no apprent reason... But then again that could be because my XP installation is beginning to fall apart...

In general at 1024*768 in 32-bit I get around 150 fps (dual P3 1G, GF3 T1200 128MB, 640MB RAM), and if I could just get rid of these slowdowns, life would be perfect >;}

150fps means nothing unless your monitor is refreshing at 150hz. When you start hitting rates of over 80fps, it makes more sense to start upping the detail/effects.

Woohoo! Just upgraded from 256MB RAM to 768MB. Whereas before I had to have it on the very lowest detail settings (640x480x16, all detail levels set at low as they'd go, no character shadows), I can now get the same frame rate at 800x600x32 with all details set to normal and character shadows on.

So it was XP eating all my RAM then :(

You're using XP? Well, there's your first mistake...
