I feel so clever... but I'm not

I'm currently enjoying bit-torrent, online gaming and pr0n all from the comfort of my halls without any fear of getting done.

How dare you ask? Well I guess I took a rather physical way around the university firewall.

56K dial up modem baby! I got myself a cheapie USB modem from ebay, got a ResTel account and added the long series of numbers ( *72* + pac number hash 9 ) to the start of a free pay per min local call ISP (example I'm using is 0845 123 2000, username "free" password "internet").

It works :)

Porn and bit-torrent can both be done within ResNet "without fear of getting done". As for on,line gaming, is it really worth it for 56k?

I've tried all the tricks and bit torrent wasn't doing it for me, as for online gaming actually a bit of CS and WoW work fine on narrowband connections.

From the ResTel help page, though:

"ResTel is not an Internet Service Provider. Please contact the IT-Services Helpdesk on ext. 3333. Further information about internet connections is also available on the IT-Services web pages. (Students are NOT to connect LapTops or PC's to the telephone network. Those found doing so are liable to have their telephone service removed)."

So either way, you're breaking a rule it seems. ;)

Use an iMac or get a non-student friend to connect your laptop/pc. QED.

They don't like people using dialup on Resnet because it ties up their outgoing lines. I gather MD110 hardware is expensive. I'm sure a while ago they claimed somewhere on the website that it cost them somewhere in the region of £1000 to provision for each new voice extension, because of the price of line cards.

What on earth does that achieve? And where does QED fit into the logic of your post?

Got to be something close to it, assuming they have fibre to Argyle Street exchange.

ResTel specify LapTops or PC's thus I suggested an iMac which is neither. They also specify Students are NOT to connect LapTops or PC's thus get a non-student to connect them.

QED as both problems solved.

Yes it should be Q.E.D. as in "quod erat demonstrandum" see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q.E.D.

Since when has an iMac not been a personal computer.

Haha, I see what you mean. I know what QED means, I just didn't understand how it made any sense in the previous context.

From Wikipedia:

PC usually means IBM PC compatible.

I was going by that definition. My 2nd point about non-students is still valid. Though that does raise the question of whether a student could connect a server (which wouldn't normally be thought of as a PC) to ResTel.

Seems awfully convenient that line you quoted from wikipedia was only added in this afternoon.

ROFLMAO

Yep very. Nothing to do with me though as I was busy at work.

EDIT: Looking at the history it looks like the article has been getting updated a lot in the last week even before this thread.

Would a server not be considered a PC? It may not be "personal", but I'd still consider it a PC based upon your definition.

Either way, I imagine if you tie up restel's phone lines 24 hours a day and they notice, they may not like you. ;)

Just so everyone knows, ResTel doesn't like it when you use their service with a modem. My external calls have been barred :(

I've deleted my first post so no one else tries it.
