I think i also said to try novatech. Their laptops in the September 2003 catalogue still look good. True most of them have no floppy anymore, but do you really need one? and if so get a usb one.

I managed to pick up a very good deal from Dell's outlet. http://www.dell.co.uk/outlet/ I got an Inspiron 8500 for £500 less than the retail price, but there are lower-end models on the site too.

Well, after looking at the dell outlet, i liked what i saw :)
But it is mostly good for high -end laptops. If you are looking for a cheap notebook just to get you by on word processing etc, stick to the novatech ones.
If you feel REALLY confident, you might try ebay- a friend of mine got for £800 a brand -new looking second hand awesome spec laptop.

TheGamesMaster - take a look at their website or call them. They're placed a good ranger with a shocking new bad range.

cm13 - I've just looked at the Allegro P4 2.4Ghz 400 FSB (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/NBspec.html?NNB-124 ) and Concerto P4 2.5Ghz 533FSB (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/NBspec.html?NNB-128 ) and reading about both it says limited stock. So it maybe only a temporary thing?

I you are looking at buying a dell try going though http://www.dell.co.uk/pcplus to see if the upto £100 helps with prices.

What type of laptop did you want again? Wasn't it one that could burn a hole though your lap?

You could also try Mesh Computers (http://www.meshcomputers.com ), they are meant to do good desktops and some of their laptops do look nice.

Dabs.com (http://www.dabs.com ) have a toshiba laptop with an ok spec for about £600 otherwise.

Dell are a good brand.

But I'm not going to pay almost 50% extra. It's like walking into a £1 shop and paying £1.50 just for the sake of it.

There seems to be a gap in the market.

yes, but when you buy a cheap computer you'll know about it soon. Dell make very good machines and offer very good technical support; althought I've heard their starting to lose ground on both those counts now.

Thanks for your help TheGamesMaster. Dabs seem to have a massive range. I'll take a look when I have more time.

Sure, Dell's are well built as I said but they're still over-priced, IMHO. Dell has and also has been, since the early 90s.
