Sharing vids, mp3s etc

Postby underworlddreams on Mon Mar 08, 2004 1:11 am

Just wondering how many people out there are interested in 'sharing the wealth', as it were, and allowing randoms to copy mp3s and DivX films over the network?

Or are we all clean-cut, anti-piracy folk here?

[hr]They say that if you play a Windows Install CD backwards, you hear satanic messages. That's nothing - play it forwards, and it installs Windows...

If you post those here you might get a warning from ITS...ie don't post things if you want to keep them!

And it's probably against the rules of the forum as it is providing personal information about people or details people could use to find out personal information.

If you want to view the shared files across the University network, I recommend you download and use a partially free (Well, the relevant bit is free for us) program called Sharescan 2. It can be found at http://www.tucows.com/preview/220820.html

When you have installed the program, I recommend you have it running when your computer starts up - to do this, drag the sharescan shortcut into the start-up folder in the 'programs' list (found when you click the start button)

The settings may need a little tweaking to help it run faster. I do the following:

Start Sharescan, Click on 'File', then go to 'My Preferences'. Click on 'Source Properties' on the left hand side of the window, and then at the bottom on the right hand side you will see an option to 'Add New Source'. Change the list from 'Microsoft Shares Computer' to 'Microsoft Shares Network' (the next one down) and then click 'Add'.

Enter the Network name as 'St Andrews', then I use thes settings in the IP address boxes (If anyone knows better settings, please post them on here):

Start IP: 138.251.100.0
End IP: 138.251.255.255

Thorough Scanning: No

Then click Ok, and it should be all set up. Go back to 'My Preferences' and look at 'Scan Options'. Make sure that it is automatically refreshing the network sources - I normally set this to 100 minutes.

This should then start up when you boot up your computer - I find on average about 400,000 files each time. I hope it helps you :)

Scanning from 138.251.100.0 upwards is a waste of resources.

The Hall IP subnets are from about 220 - 251. E.g. Uni Hall being 247.

You should really set it to scan from 138.251.220.0 to 138.251.255.255 otherwise you are scanning thousands of IPs which you don't need to.

I really can't get this to work, I'm sure I've copied those details right but can't find any files on the network

use this range: 138.251.220.0 to 138.251.255.255 i couldn't get it working when i started it at 138.251.100.0.

Sorry, I didn't realise that the range was so narrow - I do pick up things that are outside the ranges you state, but it took a long time initially to do the scan (about 3-4 hours) I should have mentioned this beforehand. Sharescan actually remembers what IP's to scan, and gets progressively quicker over use.

erm, not really. i was restating what had been said because i couldn't get the Rennies working... the original poster (fluke i think) had said it would be easier not impossible. maybe it does work though, my client said it was simply pinging for about an hour, so i gave up.

It's not impossible it just takes ages. After all it is just scanning thousands of extra IPs that it doesn't have to, it is scanning them there is just nothing there. Technically it is working (obviously) it's just rather pointless, ie a "waste of resources".

I just wish there was a way to let some people know that they are obviously sharing things they don't intend to. I guess you could e-mail them but that would be embarrassing too, I just hope people in their halls aren't looking as i would die if that happened to me :/

Has anyone thought about the fact, that if everyone is running Sharescan, that means network traffic is going to increase dramatically as people will be transfering lots of mp3s and probably films (approx 700MB in size each), if 2 or more people are going to be downloading from the same source, this is going to dramatically slow down that persons computer, and it just going to cause more problems for ITS, making the network much worse.

won't affect the network in the slightest, in my first year (4th year now) the whole internet was open as was file sharing and it was markedly faster than it is now. It will however affect the speed of the computer being downloaded from, so if that is an issue for you then don't share any files!! simple as that!

really? when I was in first year (3rd year now) the network was completely open and it was much slower than it is now( barring of course the slow downs early last semester.) Despite the fact that the number of users on resnet as roughly quadrupled since then.

As has been explained many times since bandwidth is not an issue at this university what so ever, there is oodles of the stuff even if every single person was downloading stuff at the same time!

External bandwidth yes, but as was shown by the virus activity last semester, increased network traffic ofthis nature can slow the network down internally.

The cause of the network turning into a slow beast of 5k/sec downloads 3 years ago was the result of Morpheus/kazaa become known to the masses.

Prior to that year very few people were actively engaged in the download of more than 100mb a day, as this generally required some less obvious sources: IRC/private FTPs etc.

Three years ago with the introduction of morpheus I found a typical sight was that of my computer illiterate friends racking up a download/upload combo of nearly 500mb a day.
