LGBTSoc DVD Library - Your suggestions!

Postby Akasha on Wed Jun 28, 2006 12:06 pm

Rightio,

LGBT Society has set aside a nice little pot of £££'s to buy ourselves a DVD library.

We want them to have a welfare function as well as a social one - i.e. send a positive message about being LGB or T. Or, perhaps they would help someone who is curious/questioning to understand more about themselves? Perhaps they are biographical and examine the life of a famous person who was LGB or T?

So, if you want to suggest any films/books that you think would be a good addition to our library let us know.

I'll start:

' The L Word' boxsets
'Queer as Folk' [UK Version!] boxsets
Brokeback Mountain
But I'm a Cheerleader
TransAmerica

My Beautiful Laundrette
A Beautiful Thing (though is a tad hilarious in its low-budgetry)
Angels In America (not necessarily positive, but a very moving portrayal of the AIDS crisis in the 80s)

Laramie Project.
Priscilla.

Someone like LGBTYouth Scotland might be able to give good ideas for documentaries or whatnot, but I don't think it's something anyone will know off the top of their head. And specific educational videos... *shudder*

You have my list already, Akasha.

And we already have A Beautiful Thing, I think.

Don't want to come across all arthousey but there's a beautiful little German film I saw last year, as part of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, called Summerstorm. Everyone I've shown it to has loved it.

'Get Real'

A great british gay film. I think you can only get it on video. Its well worth it if you can get hold of it.

Better Than Chocolate, But I'm a Cheerleader, Fingersmith, Tipping the Velvet, Lost and Delirious, Bound.....that's all I can currently think of for lesbian films. Get Real is quite good.

Get Real is the one with the scene where one of the characters cries because the other one is drying him off with a towel or something? I was delirious with lack of sleep when I saw it...it confused me greatly.

It's annoying, you can get it on Region 1 DVD but not Region 2, pointful.

Oh, and Kitty, Better Than Chocolate - my eyes, my eyes!!! Though I would watch it again for the drag queen song alone.

Actually, this might just save us sometime hehe.

Some of the LGBTness of these films is subtle / very hidden. I have also seen more than I care to acknowledge, but I blame my parents' video and DVD collection.

I was well upset. I think my friend Caz was a little taken aback by how mad I got at the film.

For those of you who fancy a simple night of wine and DVD frolics, I also have a disturbing amount of Will & Grace to share (will hopefully be up to season 7 by my return to St Andrews), so we could have some extra-LGBT nights of that...

I have Seasons 1 & 2. I have a special edition of Season 3, but some of the discs don't work for some reason. I;ll be getting Season 4 soon too.

I love QAF USA with all my heart...
