Andrew Melville Hall elections

Nominations are now open for the Andrew Melville Hall Committee elections, for the positions of Senior Student, Secretary and Treasurer. A full explanation of the remits for these positions can be found in the Hall Constitution, situated at the back of the foyer beside the telephones (the full set of Election Rules, as ratified by the Hall Committee and constituting a by-law of the Hall, shall appear therewith shortly).

Nominations must be proposed and seconded, in writing by residents, and handed either to the Returning Officer (David Bean, Room 28) or his Deputy (Murray Blake, Room 59), and the period for these shall close at 5PM on Sunday, 20 March; the Candidates' Meeting (which all candidates are obliged to attend, or send appropriate written apologies in writing to the Returning Officer) shall be at 7PM on the same evening. The Hecklings for each of these positions shall take place in the Middle Common Room at 7PM on Monday, 21 March, and the election shall be held on the following day directly after dinner.

Here are the Standing Orders for the Hecklings, drawn from section 5 of the election rules:

5. Hecklings
a. Hecklings will take place during the campaigning period at a time to be determined by the EOC.
b. All candidates must attend, or submit appropriate written apologies to the Returning Officer.
c. The hecklings will be chaired by the Returning Officer.
d. Each candidate shall be heckled as follows: candidates for the positions of Senior Student, Secretary and Treasurer may speak for a maximum of five minutes and answer questions for the remainder of seven, and candidates for all other positions may speak for a maximum of three minutes and answer questions for the remainder of five.
e. The Chairman shall rule out of order any remarks from that are irrelevant, prejudicial, negative (if by a candidate) or deemed not to be questions (if from the floor). In case of disorder, he/she may require disruptive parties to leave and may, in extreme cases, recommend disciplinary action.
f. Whilst each candidate is being heckled, his/her opponents shall withdraw.
g. This section constitutes the Standing Orders of the meeting, and anyone present who believes they are being breached may object to the Chairman by means of a Point of Order, all of which the Chairman must hear and rule upon (outside the allotted time for any candidate speaking, if applicable).
