Committee Elections

Hey, just got the email about the new committee positions with the names of the people who have been nominated. Candidates look good, but I was just wondering if there is any real point in opening the elections if only one person has been nominated for each position (not exactly a big choice!). I also wondered if anyone knows if there will be an option of re-opening nominations vote.

On a kind of different note, what does everyone think to the current committee members being able to nominate people for next year … is it a good representation of who they think are the most suitable candidates … or does it just imply favouritism through friendships?

i presume performing elections is merely a necessary formality
although current committee members nominating potential future members may not break any of the 'rules', it is undoubtedly unprofessional

I noticed on AU elections today that there had to be an option to vote RON for positions where there was only one candidate so I assume there would have to be the same option for DRA Elections? Could someone on the committee give their opinion?

As for nominations, I guess the committee can support who they want cuz at the end of the day another candidate was also nominated by their flatmates...it's only natural that your friends will want to nominate you so in that way you could say the whole thing is a popularity contest. There's always an element of that in elections where you know the candidates but it's up to everyone involved to be sensible about nominating and voting on the best people for committee.

As was pointed out in the previous post, everyone voting in the upcoming DRA student committee elections will be able to vote RON beside each of the candidates. Should this happen then nominations for that post would be taken again and a second vote would be carried out.

I can also see that some people might view current committee members nominating their friends as being biased or unfair, but at the end of the day they are students within the Hall and have a right to nominate anyone of their oen choice and also vote for anyone that they wish to vote for.

I would like to point out that it was the committee's idea that the current elections be run by the Warden and RA Team rather than by the Committee themselves due to the fact that a number of them were planning to stand for re-election and they wanted the it to be seen that the whole election process was being run in a fair, independent and democratic fashion.

i don't really see much point in voting for a person in the deputy, treasurer and secretary places unless you know them, i mean, the senior student post seems to have two really good candidates and we can choose between the two. i've seen quite funny posters go up today for ben, but haven't seen much from karen, although she is a ball convenor or special events or something this year and had applied for deputy until she saw she only had competition in ben. he seems pretty keen, though, but has only been on the committee for a little while - not good! even still, i think what karen did by going up against ben when it was pretty likely that everyone who had appied would get a place and be happy was a bit mean. good luck to them both, though - hope it doesn't come to blows!

Why was Jim's post deleted? Did he do it himself or did the Sinner remove it? And if it was the Sinner, why? I read it and I have no idea why they would delete it.

I just got the DRA committee's welcome letter in the entrants pack. Can't exactly say that they seem that impressive...
