Feeling cold?

Postby Latina on Wed Sep 21, 2005 1:01 pm

Hi! New postgrad here, although not new to the University or DRA.

I know the heating times have been reduced this year, which is fair enough as it did get a little to hot at times. But does anyone else think they've been reduced a little too much? 24 hours to 8 1/2 hours is rather drastic. At times, the temperatures are reminiscent of occasions when the heating broke last year and everyone froze their asses off.

At night, my bed is cold, the bathroom tiles feel cold *all* the time, and generally everything is cold! It isn't too bad when the sun s shining through, but how the hell is it going to be in the winter?

Am I really just being fussy (I tend to feel the cold more than a lot of people) or do others feel this way? Is there really no way to up the heating a bit to make it comfortable without being tropical? Because for me, this isn't comfortable.

I think the problem is that they switched the underfloor system to the system they use for the halls with radiators....which just doesn't work.

Or at least, that's what I've heard.

And yeah, I frankly froze when they switched to putting them on a timer.

Also: if your bathroom floor is NEVER warm, it is possible your heating isn't working at all.

of the same opinion...check out other thread

Postby Chinchilla33 on Sun Sep 25, 2005 3:45 am

hey guys

I too am upset about the service this year. I posted earlier in this board on the thread "hot or not", take a look.

I think that if we are not getting the heating that we have so clearly paid for then there is reason to take this up. I know some people who can help us with this, i.e. people at the union.

Would be good to get more feedback from other people. I've just generally found it colder than last year and my bathroom floor certainly isnt as hot as it was.

What is our £3600 paying for?

Yeah, I read your thread quite some time ago. Sorry to start a similar topic - I thought it'd be okay seeing how mine's not about the hot water. ;)

I don't know how things are in the other flats of course, but in my experience the hot water thing has turned out fine so far. I think switching it off during sleeping hours (they should make it later perhaps) is fine, and a good way to save money. But with heating, we're talking about something that constantly affects us during the day - especially those of us (e.g. postgrads) who spend more time here studying rather that at classes.

I don't get the logic of only having more heat during exam times or whenever it is - people study all year round (or at least spend time doing *something* indoors ;) ). We live in great conditions here and therefore want to spend time in our apartments - so we need heat!

Like I said before - I dread the St. Andrews winter!

And yes, more than 3 and a 1/2 grand entitles us to decent heating IMO. What's the use of underfloor heating (I assumed it was partly for that that we paid so much) if they give us 15 1/2 hours less of it that we had (and paid less for) before?

I really should stop waffling about this... but hey, I am trying to keep warm here. ;)

Good luck with it all, Chinchilla.

The underfloor heating system takes time to heat up and cool down, so its baffling why they use the same times as other residences that have quick temperature changes.

I'm sure I read somethig last year about it taking a number of hours to change temperature.

Thought I would resurrect my own thread as I am currently FREEZING.

The heating has been generally good over the past few weeks, but I'm very cold today. Seeing as how it's not as cold outside as it has been the last few days (so it *should* be okay), I wonder if the heating's broken?

I'm in Herkless BTW - anyone in my block also feeling the cold?

They did this last year but stopped using the timer after many people pointed out that it is MORE expensive and LESS energy efficient (not to mention smegging cold) to turn the underfloor heating on and off every day because of the massive amounts of electricity needed to get the floors up to temperature. I'll have to dig up the figures again...

Actually it was a case of the heating breaking this time. Hadn't been working for two days I think. The reception lady on the phone told me it was fixed at lunchtime. Took until about 7pm to heat up properly though. :/

I guess this happens to every block at some time or another - very annoying.

"Low temperatures within the home are a
major cause of death to the elderly, and can

therefore important that adequate heating is

I wonder if the uni is breaking HMO regulations. I think I shall investigate.
