Health and safety my arse

Postby Zombie Sheep on Thu Nov 18, 2004 2:05 pm

Anyone else get a ridiculous claim made about their room with one of those yellow sheets? I had some paper on my floor, spread out, and they said my room was below expected standards of cleanliness??!

Ok, thats interesting...because I have a pile of papers, ring binders and posters on my floor infront of the window and they said everything was ok and left...

yeah, but people who have not had their inspection yet should watch out, this year the Residence managers think they can tell us to tidy our rooms even though we all know that only mums have the right to say those words.

They are going to have a wonderful time when they go in one of the rooms just down the coridoor from me because they have stuff all over the walls and hanging from the safety rail...

Its getting a bit pathetic in Hall really, I never thought I'd hear myself say it but I think I'm actually glad I won't have to come back here next year...

Can anyone explain to me what the issue is with things hanging on the safety rail? And what is it for anyway? I don't have one as I am on E floor, but I heard someone got threatened with being kicked out because they had a towel hanging on one.

I don't have a safety rail either even though I'm on D-floor but the issue is that the safety rail is there to prevent you from falling out of your window and making splatted student on the pavement/student kebab on the railings. So if you hang stuff like towels on the safety rail then when you slip and fall and grab at the rail to stop yourself you get a towel and keep falling. If its anything like my room though the windows wont open far enough for you to fall out anyway. Other issues with it are that people use them to dry clothes which makes the air in the building damp and is kind of bad for the building over time and also...everyone across the road or on the street can see what you hang on your safety rail so its bad if its laundry.

lol, I only know that because I've had to sit through 4 of those welcome to hall meetings at the start of first semester...begin to get so you can recite them all off by heart.

Ok, Saftey rails. Some guy fell out of his window a few years ago and died. Safety rails were fitted to stop this happening again. Try grabbing on to a safety rail with a towel on it, it's not going to save you. Note that the residence contract has nothing in it about maintaining a tidy room, so ignore that one. If something has been confiscated from you you are entitled to remove it from the building at your easrliest convenience. They can NOT by law confiscate items, as this is theft in the eyes of the law (for those unsure, I'm talking about 13A heat production devices, i.e. kettles, fridges, toasters, etc. Also, "24 hours notice shall be given before visits by all members of staff not including cleaners, Wardens (in case of a complaint) and the manager of residential staff. Don't take their shit, and can I ask for all persons pending a repeat inspection to leave unrolled condoms scattered around your floor as a mark of respect for their authority.

Yeah, they did give notice but it wasn't 24 hour notice...they are a bit nasty with that....they never give enough notice, its like when people were messing with the hot water at the Abbotsford end of the building...they put the notice to say no hot water in the morning on the blackboard but only at a time so that nobody will see the notice untill after they have tried to have a shower with the no hot water and given up to go to breakfast. They really should put notices up the day before or something. Its crap the way they do it now so that you never see it till after the thing has happened.

I never saw any notice about it, which wouldn't be a big deal in my opinion except that I was actually sleeping when they came in; they woke me up by messing around with my door lock (the door was unlocked anyway)!

Yeah but when nobody answers when they knock on the door they automatically assume you are out and try to unlock the door so if you are in and not fast enough they end up locking it and get confused...
