FRESHERS WEEK IN CHATTAN 2005

For people in McIntosh Hall (Chattan).

FRESHERS' WEEK IN CHATTAN 2005

Postby liliputian on Mon Sep 05, 2005 3:53 pm

OK so the line-up runs something like this...

**SATURDAY 17th**

- 10am - Doors open for Freshers

- 10am - 6pm - Moving in and Hall Tours
Come in, sign in at the wardens office, be handed loads of (very helpful) bunff and eventually find your way to your room. Need help? Just ask one of the many willing volunteers.

- 6.15pm - Evening Meal
Your first taste of hall food ever/since last semester. Yummy...

- 8pm onwards - Traditional pub crawl (Meet in Common Room)
Get dragged round the pubs by the more experienced St Andreans.

**SUNDAY 18th**
- 2pm - 5pm - Town Tours (meet in big TV Room)
Want to see what the rest of St Andrews is like? Come to the TV Room at the front of hall (bring the parents too if you like) and take a guided tour of the town and popular sights. Tours leave every half an hour from 2pm onwards.

- 7.30pm - Punch and Pizza (Common Room)
As there will be no evening meal come stuff your face in the Common Room with pizza and incredibly potent punch. Non-alcoholic punch provided for those more sensible.

- 8pm onwards - Pub Crawl II (meet in the Common Room)
Enjoy Saturday night? Tonight you get the chance to do it all over again with more newbies and oldies.

**MONDAY 19th**
- 3pm - 5pm - DRP Beach Football (West Sands/Uni playing fields)
The Democratic Republic of Phunk (DRP) have long been the traditional hall
football team, and they will be running a recruitment afternoon/general
knockabout on either the Beach or Uni playing fields depending on the
weather/tides.

- 7pm - Warden's Welcome Talk
Jennifer Franz (warden to all those Freshers reading this) will give a welcome talk, lay down the law, and introduce the rest of the wardennial team, followed by David Lindsay (Senior Student)
and the rest of the committee, who will also introduce themselves.

- 8pm onwards - Drinking Games and Speed Meeting (Common Room)
Third night in and still don't know enough people? Or no one yet has taken your fancy? Based on the same principles of Speed Dating [s](where there are two circles go
round in opposite directions and you try to find out as much as possible about the person opposite in a short space of time)[/s], come down to the Common Room to end your woes. You never who you might meet or what you might find out...

We want returning students to come along too so as many people get to know each other in hall in general as possible, as soon as possible, to avoid too much cliquiness (that's not even a word...) and create a greater feeling of hall spirit from early on. [s]And to check out the fresh meat...[/s]

Of course there will be plenty of alcohol to help people's nerves and get them to wax lyrical.

**TUESDAY 20th**
- 1pm onwards - (Informal) Subject chats (Common Room)
Not know what to take for your second or third subject? Generally want to know what you're letting yourself in for? Can you even remember where you are? It is Day 4 after all... Pop into the Common Room where there'll be 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of various subjects to answer all your questions.

- 8pm onwards - Ghost Tour (meet the Common Room)
You've been round St Andrews during the day, and most probably most of the pubs at night, but have you ever been down to the Castle and Cathedral after dark...? Meet in the Common Room, bring a coat and a torch and try not to get too scared...

**WEDNESDAY 21st**
- 3pm onwards - Beach Games (West Sands)
Feeling active and energetic? Want to work off your hangover? Come join in beach games such as tug o' war, football and frisbee. Of course this all depends on the weather. If it rains, we'll be down the pub!

- 7pm onwards - Freshers' Debate (meet in the Common Room)
St Andrews has the oldest, and as some might say the finest(!) debating society of it's kind in the world, so come to the Common Room in your black tie and red gown and be escorted to Lower Parliament Hall for an evening of debating, drinking and probably/hopefully a bit of debauchery...

**THURSDAY 22nd**
- 8pm - 10pm - Karaoke! (Common Room)
Want to show off your vocal range or make a complete prat of yourself? The choice is yours at the Kareoke night. Punch available for a bit of dutch courage if needed!

**FRIDAY 23rd**
- 12noon - 12midnight - Pub Crawl/Treasure Hunt (meet in the Common Room)
To get a proper feel for the whole of St Andrews (rather than just the three streets and Chattan) find yourself up to 4 other team mates and join the treasure hunt-cum-pub crawl that takes in every single pub in St Andrews plus some of the historical and tourist attractions around town.

Starting at The Stables and finishing 12 hours later at the Union, you'll be given a map, a list of clues to the next place and questions about each venue. The team with the most complete answers in the 12 hours will win. The prize to be confirmed but there will of course be a wooden spoon too for the team who came last/got
lost/most pished.

**SATURDAY 24th**
- 1am - Post Pub Bonfire (Castle Sands)
When the pubs all shut, head down to the Castle Sands for warmth, water and pyromania. Bring your own booze. Bring your guitars along for a good ole campfire sing song.

**SUNDAY 25th**
- 3pm - Hall Committee Elections (Common Room)
Publicity regarding the different positions will be displayed all week, so keep an eye out.
PS Anyone considering standing must be fully willing and committed (double entendre intended...) to carry out their responsibilities - slackers need not stand!

- 6.30pm onwards - Pub Quiz (Common Room)
By Day 9 you're likely to be knackered, plus it's you're big day tomorrow! (Aww look at them all growed up...!) So why not take a break from the pub and let your liver recover by pitching your brain against a Postgrad in our Pub Quiz in the Common Room. Prizes and wooden spoons to be won!

- 8pm onwards - Video night (Big TV Room)
If Paul's quiz leaves you worn out but you're not quite ready for bed yet, why not come chill out in the TV Room for a 'college movie fest' - you know, those American films about University life that doesn't really exist!

***N.B. - There will be NO later noise curfew - it will stay at the standard 11pm curfew. And don't moan - there's nothing we can do about it.***

So that's it.

We will of course need plenty of returning student volunteers - current, former and honorary Chattanites alike - to help run all the above events. If you want to help out with anything - especially the pub crawls and tours, post on here or email me (Louise) through my profile, stating what you want to help with and I'll get back to you.

Hope you enjoy it...

David (Senior Student) & Louise (Deputy Senior)

Sounds good, but i thought that halls opened at 10am for freshers too, or am i wrong, i have not had any info from halls saying that its not 10am.

also what does it mean the curfew is 11pm? i thought students stayed out to all hours, or is the curfew thing some sort of inside joke?

The curfew refers to the noise you make in hall, not when you have to be back - don't worry! It just means that you're not supposed have any loud, noisy parties after 11pm.

As for moving in time, as far as we were aware it was 2pm, but I will check up on this.

The daemons and the upbirds are the hall football teams

if players of the upbirds and demons get in touch, then i'll add them to the programme, but as it is, so far only DRP - who plenty of people from my first year played for, it's just unfortunate not many of them lived in hall last year - have let their freshers' week plans be known.

oh and the subject talks are NOT supposed to be some big event - just a little reassurence if needed.

Fuck you, think of the poor little freshers turning up expecting subject talks and finding one random mathematician on his own in the common room. Tell the truth.

you don't have to pay for the hall events seperately - it all comes out of your hall subs which now comes out of your hall fees, so i would definately recommend the hall events! taking part is the easiest way to get to know everyone in hall, which is probably where you'll spend most of your time this year. as for the union passes, although they save you £10 from paying individually for all the events, i usually just pick and choose which events to go to - some, despite Slash's insistance, are actually good. plus, the place is packed during freshers' week so is usually a good place to meet more people.

Events

Postby ~Dumbledork~ on Thu Sep 15, 2005 11:17 am

Look it's freshers week, you make up your own mind and find out what things you like to do in st-andrews, the union is great fun especially on fridays if you like that sort of thing, there is also cheap drinks nights in pubs like booze day tuesday, although hall events are good you don't have to listen to all the returning students telling you what to do. Just turn up and see what takes your fancy.

What ever happens am sure it's going to be a great week.

Daemons and Upbirds usually have a training session through the week sometime, contact through Luis Marquez on A floor, or Joe Moore. Most of the guys aren't in hall anymore, that's why its difficult to get in touch.

Daemons play at 11 in purple tops, Upbirds at 1 in blue tops.
