Music

Postby skip on Sat Aug 12, 2006 5:21 pm

I've decided that although my DVD collection's awesome, my music collection's probably not quite big enough, or as expansive genre-wise as I'd like (basically just indie/rock/metal type stuff). So... since my idea of working to pay for Reading tickets isn't happening (the guy who was going to sell the tickets looks like he's ended up selling them for like £250 or something), I might as well spend the money on different music.

Also thought it might be a good idea to see what kind of stuff people (especially the new ones) are into, or if anyone's found any new good stuff. So any ideas?

On another note, anyone play any instruments/sing? I'll be taking my bass back up again this year (with amp this time), and I wouldn't mind actually using it this year. Nowt too serious necessarily, unless we turn out to be awesome, but just for a bit of a laugh.

I wrote a song about Michael Winner and Esure once... it was fantastic...

*sighs wistfully*

No, I'm not the guy to ask about Indie Rock guiatr wankery, I'm afraid.

Well anyone from last year will know about my music tastes... basically... everything. I am possibly the only person in the WHOLE of St Andrews who can say that they enjoy the Bop music sober!

If we're lucky enough to have decent network connectivity this year, the noobies will be able to see my ever growing collection on iTunes. 37Gb and counting...

No new bands to report yet, but albums I've found this summer that are worth a listen:
Goo Goo Dolls- Let Love In
Dixie Chicks- The Long Way
Joshua Radin- We Were Here

Oh and anyone into the heavier side of the spectrum (although not restricted to metal) should definitely go along to Rocksoc. It is THE only society worth joining. And I'm not just saying that cos I'm a DJ!
Speaking of which... this year I'm aiming to conquer St Andrews with my music... look out for me at a bop soon :P

Steve were you drunk?

Oh, the point.
I'm taking up almost all my instruments next year, which include Trombone, Harmonica, Acoustic Guitar(tho I’m not sure how to pay it.) and I might bring up the keyboard, maybe. And I'm sure at a push I could probable sing also.

On the music front. Don’t know mate.
I need some new tunes myself so I’m need to have a look.

Indeed, often working outside or near the Bop, you have to be able to enjoy it sober, otherwise you suffer from a kind of mental implosion.

I have to say though it's not quite as catchy as their previous album, Home, but I am sure it'll grow on me in time.

I have to say I thought my small Alison Krauss addiction was a rare thing, though the sheer number of people I have found in St Andrews who are AKUS fans has really surprised me.

This summer, I've not so much found anything of note, but what I have been doing is finding songs to remind me of specific events from my life, be they recent or far into the past, and using them to build a musical history. Of course, the downside is that if one song comes up in an unfamiliar context, it can kinda knock me for six.

As for iTunes network sharing, excellent, had forgotten all about that until recently, hehe.

NO, I totally get you. I heard previews of a few of the DC's songs on Radio 2 (it kicks ass, before anyone starts) and loved them. Also they were awesome on Later with Jools Holland one night. BUt when I got the album it wasn't as instantly brilliant as I'd have expected. Nowhere near as good as Home, but it is a grower just keep listening to it... try and get past the first 4 or 5 songs, cos they are the best, but they do stop you appreciating the rest of the album IMHO.

As for Alison Krauss, I'm not the biggest fan but I do like her. I love her cover of 'When You Say Nothing At All'.

AK's version of WYSNAA is too brilliant for words (well I think so), always makes me a bit sniffly - if you like it, I suggest you check out her collection of similar tracks Now That I've Found You. Ok so it's a little country, but her version of Baby (Now That I've Found You) is a tad splendiferous (must stop enthusing so much about her LOL). WYSNAA is such a gorgeous song later ruined by Ronan Keating. He does that to all the best country ones, like I Hope You Dance, done earlier by Lee Ann Womack (as far as I know).

Ben Folds kicks ass!!! 'Brick' is so beautiful. Turin Breaks are also pretty good, if you're into the whole indie thing, which Sean pretty much is.

so it's a little country

I do like a bit of country, mostly the newer stuff- Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill etc. Oh if you like more pop-rocky-country check out Rascal Flatts.
Will definitely try and track down some more AK.

K, kids... just restarting this thread.

For the more emo/screamo-ly inclined among you I have a few recomendatons.

Fightstar- The Grand Unification
Yes it's the guy from Busted, but the songs are good and it is definitely worth a listen.

Atreyu- The Curse
Top notch metalcore. Melodic, but loud and violent enough for when you want to just thrash around like a mad thing.

Vendetta Red- Sisters of The Red Death
Not that heavy, but if you check out the lyrics they are fucking brutal!! Seriously, Google them.
[hr]

Also, as an incentive to get some more action on this board, list your top 10 songs you've been listening to in the last few months. Seeing as I listen to music all the time, I need to whittle down my list. Will post it in the next few days.

Same here though I think the 4 albums I have right now plus assorted extra tracks are enough to keep most people happy to start with.

Y'all do know that Alison Krauss's version of "When You Say Nothing At All" was, in fact, the original, right? Ronan Keating's version came out with the movie Notting Hill in 1999, whereas Alison Krauss's version was a hit on the country charts in the US much earlier than that - maybe 1996? Earlier than '99, anyway. Keating's version was the cover.

And I agree with everyone about the Dixie Chicks' new album - not as good as their last, but still pretty damn good. "Lubbock Or Leave It" is a favourite.

Actually, it was done by Keith Whitley first, but was more successful for AKUS when they recorded it for the tribute to him after his untimely death.

As for Ronan, well he has a habit of stealing other people's songs and letting people believe they're his.

It's definitely a grower.

Out of interest, as there seems to be quite a few people with similar taste, anyone got anything to say about the new Faith Hill? I've only heard samples, but am not brave enough to just randomly buy it (also I am a tiny bit too poor LOL).

Well, as anybody who's seen my iTunes can tell you I listen to pretty much everything, possibly more classical and rock music than anything else but here are some of my suggestions (for the pop/rock/metal music you can find some songs as samples at www.myspace.com):

Pop/Rock/Metal (kinda covers a bit but I find it difficult differentiating genres): Moving Units, Mad Capsule Markets, Muse, Rammstein, System of a Down, DragonForce, Green Day, Reel Big Fish, Dido, Good Charlotte, Moby, Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Classical: Mozart (any), Telemann (table music especially), Vivaldi (The Four Seasons), Tchaikovsky (any), Saint-Saens (any), Dvorak (New World Symphony and Slavonic Dances are amazing but other stuff is good as well), Holst (Planet Suite)

Other: Ray Charles (soul), Jacques Loussier (jazz pianist)
