Pre-Honours Reading

Postby Finished3rdyear on Fri May 18, 2007 8:49 pm

I just wanted to mention that last summer I decided to read most of the pre honours reading list to prepare for third year.

I have just now completed third year and NOT ONE OF THE BOOKS I READ LAST SUMMER WERE RELEVANT to any of the courses I have done during the course of this year. Obviously reading is always good in Psychology, but most of that pre honours reading list refers to past modules that are no longer available.

So after spending last summer reading a lot of books for example on Schizophrenia and addiction because they were on the pre honours reading list. I can honestly say we have not done one course that has been relevant and the books have never been mentioned once.

So... if you are going into third year in september and want to do some reading this summer I would advise that you get in touch with the course coordinators of the third year modules and ask them specifically, to save you spending loads on books and time reading them when they are completely irrelevant to the course. Obviously if you want to read them because you are just interested then thats a different matter.

Also pre honours reading is not obligatory and I don't know many people who did it and there has been no difference in our performance this year.

Very true, though, in defence of the department, the addiction/schizophrenia stuff was only 1 year out of date, i'm sure some of the others were more so ;-)

I do agree though - don't do reading over the summer going into third year - they don't expect you to so enjoy the summer while you have it ;-)

Don't bother with the pre-honours reading

Most of the stuff you cover in the course reading wise are papers which back up the specifics of the lecture and that is all you need to know

Plus all the books don't even cover any specific aspect of the course

Enjoy the summer whilst it lasts - im in 4th year doing a joint with BPS recognition and my life had drained away!
