these words are not mine, but they have to be said:
Dear reader,
In the interests of public safety I here reproduce a caveat received via e. mail from one of the "clerical assistants" in the School of Biology.
"Following Health and Safety guidelines can you also ensure that any poster placed on the notice board is pinned on all four corners?"
Elementary, but all too often forgotten. If improperly fastened a leaf of A4 paper could be wrenched off in a violent draft. There is no telling what carnage an airborne piece of paper might do. It could have someone's eye out, or jam a piece of sophisticated machinery. And the danger doesn't stop there. The paper will inevitably come to rest on the floor, at which point it is a fatal tripping hazard, or perhaps land on the face of a sleeping workman thus smothering him to death.
Readers must beware: the warning was intended for quadrangular pieces of paper. Pentagons and hexagons will need five or six pins, minimum.
Insufficient pinning: the silent killer.
Don't be a clown: pin it down.
&c.
