Dickie Douglas: Nominated for SRC Member for Absent Students

Postby Dickie on Wed Mar 15, 2006 5:47 pm

I have been nominated for SRC as the member for Absent Students.

I ask for you to vote R.O.N. for this post.

Thanks

If elected will you be absent enough to miss SRC meetings?

If elected, will you promise to do all you can to move SRC from a tuesday night in order to allow you to attend, regardless of how it may inconvenience others, on the grounds that you are dedicated to this position?

SRC Meetings

Postby Dickie on Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:10 pm

In answer to the two questions above:

I would indeed, if unfortunate enough to be elected over R.O.N., post a motion to SRC to request a change of date. Only because I would have academic commitments unlike anyone else who will be sitting on SRC. It would be unfair to my constituents if elected, over R.O.N., not to try and represent them.

If such a motion were rejected then I would be forced to send permanent apologies, at least until next term. As I do not as yet know when my classes will be next term. So indeed I would be absent.

There is one simple way to prevent this issue coming up and that is to VOTE R.O.N. for this post.

R.O.N. Lost

The bloody students have been silly enough to not vote R.O.N. and so have ended up with me on SRC again.....

Any ideas on what I should do?

Laugh.

Says something about the election, though. A candidate who specifically asked not to be voted for won. Oh dear . . .

It just proves that they don't listen.
Or that we don't shout loud enough!

Surely you are free to step down?

Or indeed why didn't you decline the nomination?

I have never resigned from any post to which I have been elected, bar one which was a legalistic move.

How noble...

I voted R.O.N., Dickie. I wager that's the only time I could say that to someone as a thought of kindness.

Unfortunate. But as a student on the Evening Degree which happens on Tuesday, the same as SRC, Mr Douglas will quite simply never be able to attend the SRC. Lucky there isn't a member specifically for the Evening Degree, though it would be an absurdity quite worthy of the place.

Why did he stand? It's not as if someone can be nominated against their will. Unless things have really changed, that is.

Perhaps he was making a trenchant and/or satirical point about the elections?

Of course I have. But usually the "joke" consists of more than the candidate saying "Vote for RON."

As I have stated above I will put a motion to SRC to ask that they move from Tuesday night to accomodate the only member with academic comitments. I unfortunatly am of the undersanding that there is a very good chance that this would indeed force such a move, due to a legal responsiblity to be a Student Representative Council! I have to look into this further but how does Friday night sound? It would make meetings short.

If the SRC Member for Absent Students wishes the SRC to change to a more suitable time, then I believe that we have a duty to do so.

There is - Member for Part Time Students. We used to have one in my first year, who did send permanent apologies, but attended the Equal Ops and Education subcommittee meetings.
