i was 17 when i came to st-andrews and i got in all the pubs i tried and was even served alcohol in tescos. howevever i did manage to get myself banned from the union cos i was caught twice with alcohol, well the ban lasted 2 days. i entered the union almost every day of the ban and i was never caught! but hey i could just have been one of the lucky ones!
any how my ban ended in April and it does make me feel a bit better when i am in the union.

My academic son was banned from the union for six months for buying drinks when he was underage.

The ban actually is six months; it doesn't expire when you turn 18.

ban lasts for 6 months or until you turn 18, which ever is longest.

if you had read my post, thats what i said. If you turn 18 in 9 months time and are caught, then your ban would be 9 months, however if you are caught nine weeks before you turn 18, your ban will be 6 months

Sorry, misread it, lack of sleep somehow turned 'longest' to 'shortest'...I need sleep...

You don't get banned forever!! I got caught and got a 6 month ban. It didn't really effect me because i still went in and continued to drink in the union and nobody ever stopped me. As regards I.D for pubs, i have never been asked for I.D in St Andrews.

Please do not attempt to buy or consume alcohol if you are underage.
I don't want to sound like a real nag, but quite frankly it is illegal and a disciplinary offense (meaning you risk losing your membership to the Students' Association and can be banned from the building [forever!] for doing it). If you try it in other pubs, they may also impose a licensee ban, again meaning it is a criminal offense to ever enter the premises again. Harsh.....but completely true. Most larger licensed premises will check ID before you even enter the building, nevermind get near the bar.

And if I have lots of disciplinary hearings in the start of term, I will not be happy.

However, please keep in mind that underage students are always welcome to come into the Students' Association and enjoy themselves; they just can't drink alcohol.
