Honestly dude,

Telling people it is your birthday when you first get here will be a great way of making new friends. Everyone is just looking for a way to break the ice and get together, after all, birthdays is the one thing everyone has in common.

Hey, but thats good! I mean, ok, you won't know many people, but you're guaranteed to get to know loads, fresher's week appears to be THE thing every year, so I'm pretty sure you won't be bored or lonely on your birthday!

Oh and if it makes you feel any better, for the past... something like 4 years I've had my birthday smack in the middle of a cold, dready February exam week. And although I was with friends I couldn't exactly enjoy it all that much (because, naturally, passing the exam was the priority). So don't fret- you could be worse off :p

Speaking of which - if my exams go well this summer - might even be there in St Andrews to wish you a happy birthday :p Whats your name, what are you going to study?

Iain...and im coming to study german and russian...(god knows why)...better than physics and astronomy...god i struggled through 2 years of that for nothing.

WELL..I can tell you a few reason why to study russian - I just happen to BE Russian, and its a glorious language :p With your knowledge of Russian it would mean that you'd be able to thoroughly enjoy our literature, hilarious pop song lyrics, and actually order food you want in a restaurant, as oppose to stupidly pointing to the first longest word, stuttering out "ETO" :p

About the German, you could say that I know I'm talking about too, its my third mothertongue as I live in Vienna, Austria. Also, same reasons - cool language, great lit, and yes- definately better than physics and astronomy!! I guess with language degrees you'd get to travel quite a lot. Also there are tons of Russians in Germany and Austria, especially with the Alpine tourism, so its a useful combination.

Come to think of it, the stupidest combination I've heard of yet is this girl on newstudent.org studying Criminology and Dance *haha i guess she watched Miss Congeniality too often :p

lol...That is rather bizzarre...i like german lit...i allready speak it...hence the taking that rather than something else...The main reason i want to do russian is because my mother speaks it but meh...

this is a general question - does EVERYONE hate physicists?! whenever i have visited the uni all the non-physicists seem to have this sort of 'friendly' grudge thing going on.....

I know a few astro-physicists in Fife Park - i'm even living with one of them and my other housemates are doing things like chemistry and maths and medicine :P

I've got nothing against the subject personally, even though i'm doing an Arts degree (psychology, it's technically an art, i swear :P). There's not really any grudge against any subject - you might get asked what you do and teased about it if it's an arts student that asks, but that's as far as it'd go. And they'd probably soon move onto asking what music you liked which is a far important issue ;-)

OK, here's what you do. Post as much as you can on The Sinner, e-mailing other freshers and generally getting to know a really wide range of people. Don't hold back, just do it. You'll end up with a ton of great friends before you've even got here.

Hello to any 04 Freshers who also did this last year :)

Just look through the old pages of the New Students board and you'll see the evidence of last years' freshers. And search for the word "Nicenet" on The Sinner, we had our own separate message board which involved a pretty large number of people. I highly recommend that you use that site too! And, I think I remember you saying on another board you were Glaswegian? Well, if so, make sure you go to the Glasgow Reception you'll be invited to in September, I still talk to a good few people I met there.

To use a cliché, this is incredibly bizarre thinking that this time last year I was writing to other scared freshers on this board. It just shows you how you have no need to worry about the social scene.
