a few questiones...

hi
i have an offer to study social anthropology starting in september 2005 at St A's and wouldn't mind also studying theology and philosophy alongside it too, was thinking of history but there is a timetable clash so prolly cannot do that.

Anyway, anybody doing phil/ theo/ social anth??? - what are they like? I am trying to decide between durham and st andrews and durham have said i can swap to study phil and theo there which would be cool - the course there seems a little better, espeically the philosophy side.

Also, i wana cox for the mens uni rowing squad - are they gd, where do they row, and anybody know if the boat club has a skulling double/ coxless quad i could go out in occasionally cos i like to do that too. Plus, is there a swimming pool?

Finally, i dont really drink and ppl seem to be very 'drink, drink, drink' - at all unis i guess, do many ppl not drink cos i dnt wana be the only one who doesn't and i dnt wana feel left out.

So, any ideas on chosing between durham and St A's = welcome!!

cheers

Philsophy is one of the best subjects in St A !

I think, generally speaking you can swap whatever you want in first year.

There are a few exceptions, but you can change your degree up until the end of 2nd year.

Also, with the credits required, you will have to study at least 3 different subjects in first year, which allows you to get to know the way they teach etc.

Don't worry about the drinking stuff.

There are so many different ppl - not all of them drink!

Most important socializers are your accommodation and the societies you join in fresher's week.

St A is the bestest uni I've ever seen!

I'm a non drinker and still a whirling socialite - i go out a decent number of times and manage fine with my mates. just be prepared to tell people that you don't drink repeatedly and that, yes, that includes champagne, even little glasses. in short... it won't be a problem for anybody.

I don't know a great deal about durham apart from that its layout and general atmosphere is kind of the same as St Andrews. I can tell you here we have a pretty close student body, with a lot of people knowing a lot of other people. you won't walk down the street without bumping into somebody that you know, usually a friend, which makes living in St Andrews a very sociable experience.

We don't have a nightclub, so people assume that we don't have a nightlife. There's always balls or parties or other events going on during term time and people make a lot of their own fun. If you want to enjoy yourself in St Adnrews and make the effort to do so then you really will

When I was chosing my univeristy (almost 4 years ago now!) I was torn between Durham and St Andrews so here's some suggestions to help you decide:

1. The importance of your college/hall. Hall in St Andrews is for one year minimum, while in Durham you are attached to a college for the whole process

2. Chop and change. I came to uni studying Maths and am now doing History (having not done A-level History) No where offers you the flexibility to study so many subjects in different fields than at St Andrews.

3. St Andrews has a beautiful beach

4. The library at Durham is probably better than at St Andrews

5. St Andrews has golf - if you like golf this is a great thing but even if you don't it really gives the town a good atmosphere. Durham is focused on the Cathedral and University while St Andrews is focused on the Uni, Golf and Tourism which makes for a great mix.

Hope some of these comments are helpful.
Nigel
