DN would be Donaldson.

http://www.thesinner.net/article/25 for why the blocks are so-named.

The new blocks (Lang and Nisbett) were named after our esteemed Principal and... errm...

Surely Lang would be after Andrew Lang rather than the present Principal. At least I hope so. It would be an unwelcome break from tradition if the University were starting to name buildings for those still living.

Compare what you get for the same price:

Staying in Hamilton, catered.

So, I would never go to DRA, given that I pay the same for accommodation out of town and without food.

So basically, you only pay the toilet and TV for the price of long distance and no food.............................

I couldn't bear the thought of someone cooking for me though...I wouldn't like sharing a toilet and/or a room...So all in all I think its better for me...

Only DRAs a bit more than a bog and a TV. Underflor heating, really nice power showers, double bed, brand new appliances in the kitchen and this year a brand spanking new communal building. Trust me when i wa sput in DRA as a fresher i was sceptical, turned out to be the best thing ever. Catered halls the foods crap, plus you can eat when you want in DRA, which as a arts student like me is a great thing, as you never miss breakfast.

Can't see many real advantages in that:
[l]
[li] Television will cost you a TV license every year.
[li] Underfloor heating - I'm quite happy without heating through most of the time.
[li] Power showers exist in other halls as well.
[li] Double bed leaves your room with little space for anything else (from what I have experienced in New Hall).
[li] Brand new appliances in the kitchen will not be new for long, and you'll still have to clean them. Plus other halls have brand new kitchens.
[li] Communal building - all halls have a common room(s) and the central ones are close enough to the pubs, off licenses etc., so they don't need a bar!
[li] You'll always miss the morning, as there is no breakfast to wake you up!
[li] The only advantage is the en-suite, but I'd happily trade that for food and a shorter walk, as standard is perfectly liveable.
[/l]

But I'm slightly biased as I've spent many years in standard catered accommodation and am back in catered accommodation next year. But the food isn't really that bad - I really enjoy my fully-cooked breakfast!

You are asked if you want catered/self-catered and standard/en-suite., so you could choose that part. When I applied for accommodation for my first year, I added a supplementary letter asking to be put into one of two halls for family reasons (i.e. someone in my family used to live there), and I ended up in one of those two halls. I know of someone else who tried the same method, and they also got the hall of their choice.

If you make your preferences known, you might get the hall you wanted.

- Everyone just watches TV without a licence - i made the mistake of buying one last year and there was no need. Sure, you'll get letters warning of your impending fine but you'll never actually be caught so any my tip to freshers is to not buy a licence.

- The rooms are a lot bigger than in New Hall so they take the double bed comfortably and there is still loads of room.

- I'd rather sleep longer and miss breakfast.

- There are other good things such as loads of plug sockets in your room and a lot of lamps etc....

I did really like DRA last year - it was sociable as well, even without the communal area. This year, however, should be even better and that is why i'm moving back.

Until they tighten up and the whole of DRA is caught - nearly a million in fines (when fully occupied)!

I stand corrected (though I'm sure many standard sized rooms have more space).

- I'd rather sleep longer and miss breakfast.

You're probably not a scientist who has to be up for 9 o'clock lectures every day. Hence I might as well have breakfast.

Extension leads and multiway adapters do the trick - it's amazing how much can be plugged into one wall socket!

As I said, I'm biased towards traditional standard catered halls and have fully enjoyed living in them - all sorts of random conversations over meals!
