girls lacrosse?

Postby livelovelax on Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:38 pm

hi, i'm coming to st andrews in september, and i was wondering if somebody could answer a few questions for me.

what's the girls lacrosse team like? are they any good? can total beginners play, or do you have to try out? do you need your own equipment, or is it provided? how long do practices last and how often are they? is the coach any good?

thanks for any info!

hi there. the lacrosse club here has about 40 members and there are women's, men's and mixed matches throughout the year. there is a wide variety of standards - we had total beginners right through to a couple international players in matches this season. hopefully next year there will be separate practices for beginners so they can get more specialised and intensive training to help them get up to match standard as quickly as possible. this season we had 3 sessions a week - an hour on tuesday evenings on the astro with our coach (an ex-st andrews captain and senior scotland player), and either matches or an hour and a half of practice on wednesdays and saturdays (coached by the president, captain and vice-captain). practice times etc for next season haven't been decided yet but come along to the stall at the freshers' fair to sign up or email lacrosse@st-andrews.ac.uk if you have any question. overall i'd like to think we're a pretty friendly bunch so come along and give it a go.

should also have said about equipment - we have some sticks that people can borrow to try out playing with, although after a few weeks the club requires you to get one of your own (although this could mean purchasing the one you've borrowed from the club second hand). most other things are provided - ball, bibs etc although everyone needs their own football boots for sessions on the grass pitches and mouthguard for mathces. there will also hopefully be a dedicated st andrews lacrosse website up and running in the near future. as to whether we're any good, we qualified for the knockout stages of the BUSA tournament, losing to edinburgh who were the overall British winners (you can check out the results on www.busa.org.uk). i think the general consensus is that we're a decent team considering the size of the club and the university, as well as the limited funding and resources, and team with lots of potential for the future.
