Are there many hall events in Melville?

I was hoping for St Regs or JB as I loved how it seemed there was a sense of community there but was put in Melville.

Also is C block mainly guys?!

I spent last year in Melville, and like you was diassapointed when I found out I was going there.

But I am sooooo glad I did. I had the time of my life. It's not about the hall, it's the people in it and what you make of it.

We had a good commitee who organised loads of events so make sure when it comes to elections you pick people who are going to put effort into it.

Our commitee was great. We had a halloween and christmas party, and an awesome James Bond Night where we hired out the cinema at midnight for the premiere of Casino Royale in St A's. There were martini's, popcorn and we all got dressed up. It was a good laugh.

But bottom line... give Melville a chance. Sure the buildings' hideous and the food interesting but it has a great hall spirit. I honestly don't know a single person who has stayed there who doesn't look back very fondly at their time in Melville. We will miss it next year.

The bottom line is that every first year will proclaim their hall is the best - Melville is no different. JBH, it's true, does have a very very close knit community, almost slightly cliquey to most outsiders because they have so many hall-based events and their famous Frosty Monday nights etc. But by and large all the halls are pretty good places for interacting and you could do an awful lot worse than go to Melville.

As others have said you get a fair few events put on and as long as you are prepared to be uninhibited (for want of a better word) and just get out there and mingle you will be fine - but this goes for all halls, and if you struggle to make friends in Melville then there won't be much hope for you in any other hall. As far as I'm aware each hall is allocated a similar number of British/foreign students and of all ages and backgrounds, so the mix is pretty standardised wherever you go.

First thing to do when your parents leave you or you've got everything in your room is to go and knock on the few doors around yours and introduce yourself. If no one is there, move up or down a floor. Basically get yourself known. And if you're considering coming on the Sunday instead of the first Saturday, then don't (unless it can't be avoided). Majority arrive on Saturday and it will only make it harder to introduce yourself later.

On the same note, make sure you go along on the pub crawl that usually happens on the first night. You usually have your first dinner in hall on the Sat evening (the only Saturday evening meal you'll be provided with) and then they usually have a wine reception in the foyer a bit later, followed by everyone going off on a pub crawl (the best way to quickly get your bearings of the town and meet more Melville-ites.)

Enjoy it, first year is totally the best.

And I meant to say, it appears that every year they mix the blocks gender-designations. I'm not sure why, but no two years seem to be totally the same.

Ooh it sounds good.
I am warming to Melville a little!

Also.. the no poster rule.. are they really strict about it?

Where are you staying next/this year?

You can pin posters to your notice board (each room has one wall with a very large cork board attached to it) but you must use pins, and no Blu Tack or Sellotape. One of my friends was made to take down some posters and drapes he'd attached to other walls, but I think it very much depends on how well you get on with your cleaner, as to whether she will shop you ;-)

However, Melville's walls are largely awkward to put anything on anyway - the only wall with any space left for anything is the one above the desk (the other walls have wardrobes, shelves, sink, mirrors and cork board attached to them) so it doesn't necessarily feel spartan.

I graduated in June so I won't be back in St Andrews sadly, but I wouldn't hesitate to have my first year in AMH again if the opportunity ever arose.

I guess ill see you all there my room code says AM/E247! does that mean anything to anyone?
cya there!

This is also my first time in Melville, but what really seems messed up is that I just confirmed my place with the exact same room code AM/E247 and it is supposed to be a single room :S
What kind of cooking stuff is already available ? And how big is the kitchen locker to put away ur own stuff?
Keep the Melville spirit up!

It’s been this way from the start
Everybody walking round with holes in the heart
Everybody holding up skies in the dark
As the stars keep falling

Cooking facilities are provided, but you'll have to bring your own utensils, pans, plates and cutlery.
