I remember my first night out in St Andrews a year ago during Fresher's week, the second question asked was:

"Do you have Facebook ?"

Why facebook ??? Is it going to be the same again this year ???

All the freshers-to-be seem to have Facebook already, these days, since it was opened to high schools, and then the whole world. It used to be that it'd take the freshers at least a week or so to get on Facebook once they'd got here... I guess this way they get to know people a bit earlier if they're so inclined. I imagine people will still be asking each other if they have Facebook, though, in freshers week.

I never understood why people ask that. Surely if someone is that interested in adding a person as a friend, they can just search for their name, right?

Maybe what they really mean is "Do you have Facebook? I want to know if I can be spared all that tedious chatting, socialising, getting to know you and making friends by instead stalking you online for five minutes and then clicking 'Add [x] as a friend' to show the true depth of bond between us."

Back in my day, we had to make friends in person. I still know a few luddites who never upgraded to the insta-friend era. It wasn't until my second semester in my first year that Facebook appeared, IIRC. Those were mad, mad times!

Hey, I have a sense of humour, I just think it's kind of sad how huge a role Facebook plays in some people's lives. Shy people like me struggle enough without normal people deciding to do everything through the internet. Facebook just opens up a whole new area of social paranoia!
