Money matters!

Hey all,

I'm starting in St Andrews in September and I'm just wondering how much money I'll need for the year for general expenses, etc. I'm hoping to be in catered halls, so that cuts food out of expenses. I've been working for a while so I've got a nice little sum saved but I'm heading away for the next month or so, so I'm wondering how much I should lock away so I don't touch it!

Cheers.

When I was in first year and living in Catered halls I managed on about £50 a week which included all of my expenses including socialising. Some weeks it was too much others not enough. I used the excess on some weeks to fund the defecit in others.

Decide how much you can afford to spend in a week and STICK TO THAT BUDGET. That is the best advice I can offer.

...but don't forget what you're paying for. Average-quality food at set intervals. Don't forget to budget for luxuries, missing meals, dining out on special occasions, tea/coffee, Saturday and Sunday nights etc

All that said, I would agree with ohhmy that £50 a week is sensible. Some booze, some ents, a couple of luxuries here and there. Budgeting is difficult but VERY worthwhile.

You wouldn't steal a handbag. You wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't steal a containership full of tanks. Piracy is a crime, do not accept it.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure it'll all be very useful for myself, and every other fresher, next year
