Deviant Noise vs RockSOC

Postby jools on Wed Mar 24, 2004 8:34 pm

Has anyone else noticed how RockSOC seem to be forever mixed up with Deviant Noise?!? Deviant Noise was founded by students wishing to escape RockSOC. Now its half run by RockSOC... and getting almost as repetitive and predictable. I hope that the Deviant Noise committee members will remember that DN stood alone in its all-embracing attitude and unique events... don't let it become another crappy society to be avoided... and stop doing stuff with RockSOC... it just ruins everything...

I don't think I agree with anything you have said. Deviant Noise and Rocksoc are still two different societies, but they do have some mebership overlap (this includes myself). I assume this is a dig at the fashion show on Thursday, and in my (and I'm sure most people's) opinion it is a good thing that it's being organised by both Rocksoc and DN members as it is more likely to bring in greater numbers, which means in future other such events may be possible without complaints that "no one will turn up" a la the thread about a Rock Bop on the Rocksoc message board. I'd also bet that the respective comittee members of both societies wouldn't be too impressed with your comments either.

Actually, I believe that Deviant Noise was founded by students to give somewhere for those wanting to hear music that doesn't get played anywhere else in St Andrews. Or, at least, that's what I was told when I arrived here in my first year.

Also, I am the only member of both committees (Ents monkey for Deviant Noise, and VP for RockSoc) so I take your comment about Deviant Noise being 'run by RockSoc' very seriously - how could it be if I am the only common member? Speaking as a Deviant Noise committee member, we are not run by RockSoc.

So RockSoc is predictable and repetitive? Welcome to St Andrews - where unpredictable and random societies fall at the first hurdle; getting their membership to turn up at events.

Deviant Noise manages to avoid seeming repetitive by having a wider range of music than RockSoc (although Rock is never a narrow genre by any stretch of the imagination) to draw on, thus never seeming to be restricted in what they play. But they still have to get their membership to turn up - they have to follow some kind of pattern, whether it be the kind of music that gets people to attend or dance, right down to the simplicity of when the events are.

So what about the events with RockSoc then? What exactly is your problem with two music societies trying to come together and boost each other's event attendence, takings, membership lists and general awareness in the student body?

Are you maybe under the (old and never really true) assumption that RockSoc and Deviant Noise should be entirely exclusive - if you're a member of one, you can't be a member of the other - and constantly at loggerheads? Possibly is it because you think every society should stand on its own two feet, and never rely on another to help out with anything? If the former, please grow up - we're adults, and we can play well with others now. If the latter, just think about the fact that both societies are affiliated - they get help and sponsorship from the Union. If it's something else, then please do inform us all - I'm dying to hear what reason could give adequate reason for RockSoc and Deviant Noise to sever all ties to each other.

As for the Fashion Show this evening - which, I am guessing, brought all this on - I am extremely glad that RockSoc and Deviant Noise can come together on this. If one or other of the societies had tried to put this on by themselves, it probably would never have worked. Nothing like this has ever been attempted by a music society before, and to see someone waling on the idea, if not the actual event, before it has even happened puts an extremely foul taste in my mouth.

Deviant Noise has become a lot more predictable and boring. Playing out crummy Drum & Bass all the time. Which is one reason why I didn't bother showing up anymore.

As for Rocksoc, I never did like it much. But that's only because they played very predictable sets. It doesn't help of course that I'm not really into metal! Whatever, each to their own...

deviant noise was originally the alternative alternative music society, set up because the president of alternative music had dumped one of the founders of deviant noise

yeah - what Fenton said! But with a bit more of a 'sod off' at the end...

The idea that Deviant Noise is run by Rocksoc, or any other society for that matter, is frankly insulting to everyone who has worked so hard for the society this year.

Now let me help you out with a few facts here...

1 member of our committee is on that of rocksoc.

We have put on a whole 2 joined events with rocksoc this academic year!

Now the reasons we have done these events are simple.

Firstly, last year there was a ridiculous animosity between the societies. This was unproductive. Joint events improved matters.

Secondly, while remaining distinct, it seems that both societies have the goal of promoting alternative music in this cheese-bop oriantated town.

Thirdly, to put on individual events as untried as the Alternative Fashion Show we need the support of other societies; rocksoc were the logical choice for an event such as this. These kind of large, expense heavy nights do not work in this town when only one society is involved.

Fourthly, The only other joint night of this ENTIRE ACADEMIC YEAR was during the holiday after exams. Neither society had enough members to put on an event, but the people who were left in town decided we wanted to drink and have a good time anyway. We did...

Fifthly, multiple society events help break that monotony and predictibilty you mentioned. Currently there is talk of an event with Asian soc at some point.

Right, so I hope that clears a few things up. Now, if you were at the Fashion Show last night and you have a hat, then start chewing. It was a brilliant night made possible by the involvement of another society. A big thank you to all the members of both societies who had faith in it and helped to really create something.

Finally Mr Jools, if you can't accept these arguments then I would ask you to come along to the AGM in a couple of weeks and stand for a position. If you do actually represent what the majority of DN members think then you should have no problem being elected, should you? And thats kinda the point of the AGM, to keep representing the members views by voting in people whose views and policies will be best for the society.

Yeah, what Fenton said. And what Bede said. Also, if you came along to a joint event you would see that they tend to have a different atmosphere than any of either society's own events, which makes them a nice change. They also expose members of both societies to new types of alternative music, which lots of people appreciate. They appreciate it because the vast majority of members are not small-minded wankers.

As the former(first) vice-president of Deviant Noise,(2000-02)and whom i think this remark is directed at, i would like to say Deviant Noise was set up as both a laugh and as an attempt to compliment the other music societies. However, if it did piss off some less than open-minded members of altsoc then all well and good. Having said that, considering the general nature of many of the students in St.As, its a small wonder there are any decent societies full stop.
